C. Diet For Hair Growth

Before we discuss the diet for healthy hair growth, here is a small brief about the hair growth cycle. Each strand of our hair goes through three stages in its entire life cycle:

  1. The Anagen stage – A phase where you can actually notice the growth of your hair. The follicle divides and contributes to the lengthening.
  2. The Catagen stage – This is more of a transitional phase. Here, the hair growth stops and the shaft of the hair is pushed up closer to the surface as the follicle shrinks.
  3. The Telogen stage – This is the resting phase and lasts for about two to four months. Once this phase is over, the hair sheds on its own accord.

A few dietary modifications are very important for stimulating the process of hair growth and preventing hair loss. Abolition of junk and processed food, aerated drinks, smoking, and drinking is very beneficial for your hair and scalp health. Include vitamin and mineral-rich fruits and vegetables, whole grains, carbohydrates, omega-3 fatty acids, and protein-rich food in your diet. These are rich in phytonutrients that are beneficial for hair growth.

Below are the lists of some foods you can include in your daily diet for better hair.

27. Protein-Rich Foods

Our hair is made of a special protein called keratin. Try to include eggs, chicken, tofu, soybean, kidney beans, and other similar foods in your diet. These are the richest source of proteins for hair. They promote the growth of new hair and make your hair shiny and smooth (24).

Back To TOC

28. Vitamin A

Vitamin A is beneficial for hair growth (25). Mango, papaya, orange, prunes, carrots are few foods that have a high content of vitamin A. Here is an excellent post on how vitamins help hair growth.

Back To TOC

Vitamin B stimulates the production of hemoglobin in our blood that acts as the oxygen carrier. This increases blood circulation in the scalp. Include potato, banana, chicken, oatmeal, fish, and beans in your diet (26).

Back To TOC

30. Vitamin C

Vitamin C helps in collagen production and fights off the free radicals in the skin. Do not forget to include lots of fruits like amla, oranges, kiwis, and guavas in your daily diet (27).

Back To TOC

31. Vitamin E

The scalp capillary function is stimulated by the intake of vitamin E in your diet. It increases blood circulation and promotes hair growth. Cereals, sunflower oil, soybean oil, tofu, etc. contain good amounts of vitamin E (28). You must try and include as much of these foods in your diet as you can.

Back To TOC

32. Green Vegetables

Try to include lots of dark green vegetables in your diet. These contain iron that is essential for hair growth (29).

Back To TOC

D. Natural Solutions

Proper care and prevention will surely help to cope with any type of scalp or hair trouble. All the natural solutions will show their effect only when you are capable of fighting against indiscriminate hair loss.

33. ‘Say No’ To Hair Styling Products

A popular proverb says, ‘no style is the best style’. This proves to be true when it comes to hair. Many of the hairstyling products contain harmful chemicals and superficial agents, which can be highly dangerous at times. You may look attractive for a few days by applying a hairstyling product, but you never know how it affects your hair and scalp in the long term. Therefore, you should minimize the application of harmful styling products like hair colors, serums, and straighteners.

Back To TOC

34. Regular Combing and Trimming

Comb your hair thrice a day and trim it every three months. Regular combing and trimming are extremely important for expediting the growth of new hair. Combing is essential as it provides good blood circulation and stimulates hair follicles, helping them produce new hair naturally.

I can’t even hold garlic clove in my hands because it makes me hot and itch so bad so imagine if I rubbed it on my scalp, but if I use aged garlic extract orally or topically I have no problem. The smell is nowhere near the same as a garlic clove and it does not linger. It taste sort of like soy sauce.I wash it out of my hair after 20-40 minutes with a non toxic shampoo. So many people couldn’t understand how it made my hair grow so fast, thick and long. They think I’m wearing a big wig.

Hi Anna, rough and dry hair can be the result of dry, itchy scalp and lack of moisture. First of all you will need to tackle with dandruff…a healthy scalp will lead to healthy hair. Some of the remedies to tackle of these problems are:
    1. Yogurt and pepper – yogurt contains friendly bacteria that prevents scaling of scalp and pepper is an antifungal. Take two spoons of pepper and ground it finely. Add this to one cup of yogurt or curd. Mix it completely and apply on the scalp (make sure you apply only on the scalp and not on the hair). Leave it undisturbed for an hour and then rinse. Use a mild shampoo after that.
    2. Olive oil – Olive does two things here. Firstly it can cure dandruff and secondly it moisturizes the dry areas of the scalp and the hair. Before going to bed, massage your scalp with warm olive oil every day. Cleanse your hair with a mild shampoo the next morning. Ensure the olive oil is just warm and not too hot.
Hope you find these tips to be useful and do share your experience with us !

Thanks….glad that you liked our article :-) application of onion juice is an effective way to boost hair growth. However the pungent smell of onions can be difficult to get rid off but not impossible. Few ways of removing the smell is rinsing your hair with apple cidar vinegar or few drops of lemon juice diluted in water after shampooing of hair. Another way is to apply olive oil in generous amount..leave it on hair for an hour and then wash your hair with a mild shampoo. Secondly, it is true that biotin is beneficial for healthy hair and nails. Biotin can be found in eggs, mushroom, avocado, peanut butter, cheese, salmon, cauliflower, whole wheat bread, almonds, bananas, soyabeans etc. Do include these items in your diet to enjoy the benefits of biotin.

If one then also don’t drink any water during the day, the acidity stays in the body undiluted and this is where damage occurs.

Also apply oil to your hair before you hit the bed.. leave it overnight and wash your hair next morning. Do wash your hair before you step out, as oily hair attracts dust and dirt making the scalp greasy.

When your baby is born estrogen levels also starts declining and all the hair which were in resting phase start falling out. Generally the hair come back to their pre-pregnancy state after 6-8 months of baby’s birth. Some of the remedies that will help in minimizing hair fall and damage caused due to pregnancy are :
    1. Egg white: Make a hair pack by blending one egg white and two tablespoon olive oil well. Apply it on your hair for around 30 minutes and then rinse it off with lukewarm or cold water.
