BRAT Diet – Amazingly Effective Diet For Diarrhea January 20, 2016

Are you suffering from acute diarrhea? Does thinking about food bring a sick feeling to your stomach? Well, in that case it is best to stick to a BRAT diet. When we think of the word ‘diet’, the first thought that comes to the mind is weight and fat loss. The word diet does not always mean a weight loss plan. Eating food other than your normal daily food in a restricted manner could be for many other reasons too.

BRAT Diet:

The BRAT diet is meant for those suffering from gastrointestinal problems like indigestion, diarrhea, gastroenteritis, etc. When you have an acute stomach upset, you do not feel like taking any food for it can aggravate the condition, or even the smell of food can aggravate vomiting. What is brat diet? The BRAT diet is an acronym, where B stands for Banana, R for Rice, A for applesauce, and T for toast. Some even add Tea and Yogurt, making the word BRATTY. This is a low fiber diet for people suffering from stomach upset. The diet is also useful for women who suffer from morning sickness during pregnancy. The food provides rest to the stomach when you are sick.

Why The BRAT Diet?

When a person suffers from vomiting or diarrhea, following the BRAT diet would be ideal. The diet helps to replace the nutrients lost from the body during the erratic bowel movements and vomiting. When you have an upset stomach, the body finds it difficult to break down and digest complex food. Bland, simple food is easier to process in such situations. Banana and rice are binders that help in constipating. Pectin in applesauce is another ingredient that fends off diarrhea. Hence brat diet for diarrhea is considered to be the best diet.

A. Fluid Intake Is Important:

The person needs to have plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration. Clear fluids like water, clear broth and flat soda can be consumed. Oral rehydration solutions can be consumed to replenish the essential salts depleted during diarrhea and vomiting. No caffeinated and carbonated drinks, milk, or alcohol should be consumed during the period. This can make the diarrhea worse. There are commercial beverages available in the market, which can be consumed with the BRAT diet. It has ingredients similar to banana, applesauce, brown rice puree, and electrolytes combined. How far these commercial beverages are good, is yet to be seen. It is always better to stick to pure, clean and boiled water during diarrhea to decrease the problem.

B. Short-Term Diet:

The BRAT Diet is usually recommended for young children suffering from gastrointestinal problems. Once it settles the upset stomach, it is best to resume a normal diet. The BRAT diet has minimal protein, energy, calcium, vitamins, fats, fiber, and iron. It should be continued for only for a short period.

The BRAT diet, followed for a long time, can make you malnourished as it does not have the elements of a healthy diet. It is important to resume a normal diet at least within 48 hours of an upset stomach. This diet is meant only for managing diarrhea or an upset stomach. It is in no way a cure for the problem.

If the BRAT diet does not control the symptoms even after 48 hours, it is best to consult a doctor for the gastrointestinal problem.

Today many physicians are not comfortable with the BRAT diet. They ask patients to add other bland foods to the diet, such as boiled potatoes, saltine crackers, clear soup, skinless chicken, etc. One thing to keep in mind is to limit the intake of fiber as this can cause more gas or bloating in the stomach.
