Written by Arshiya Syeda, BA (Literature & Psychology), PG Diploma  •

I’ve been experimenting with hair colors since I was 16. Being 21 now, let me tell you that there are only a few things in the world that can be as fun as dyeing your hair. But at the same time, you cannot ignore the damage that your hair is being put through every time you put new chemicals in it. This was why I started wondering if there were natural and healthier alternatives. Here’s what I found:

After a lot of research, I was able to put together this list of 7 herbal hair colors that you can make at home. Whether it is to cover up grays, experiment with colors, or simply go a few shades darker or lighter, these home hair color treatments will have you covered.

For example, use chamomile tea on blonde hair to add yellow tones, or prepare some tea from cloves to add reddish tones to your hair. You can also use coffee or black tea to make your hair look brown.

Henna is one of the best natural ingredients you could use to color your hair. Not only is it extremely pigmented, but it also conditions and nourishes your hair. You can combine it with ingredients like black tea to dye your hair brown instead of red. The color lasts for about a month, and you will only have to dye your hair again when your grays start to show.

This hair color treatment is perfect for covering up grays naturally. The saffron imparts a beautiful golden-brown color onto your gray hair, which blends in with dark hair types.

If natural colors don’t do it for you, I also found an alternative for unnatural hair dye – food color. While this is not an herbal treatment, it is still much better than using chemical laden dyes in your hair. Also, it’s a lot more budget-friendly.
