Winter is here, and as the temperatures go down, it brings along with it a multitude of health problems for you and your family. Common cold and flu threaten to disrupt your daily routine and zap your energy. So, how can you stay healthy this winter? Well, Ayurveda has a solution for everything, and it can not only help you combat the winter blues but also enable you to be your healthiest this year. Here’s how.

Ayurveda is a traditional Hindu system of medicine, and it is also incorporated in the Atharva Veda (the last of the four vedas). Ayurveda is India’s natural system of healing and has spread worldwide as a comprehensive system of mind-body medicine.

It helps us understand our bodies based on the three doshas – Vata, Kapha, and Pitta. It also teaches us the inner energies of foods, herbs, and spices. It shows us how to control our mind and senses through dharmic values. Along with all of these, Ayurveda also advocates maintaining daily health care regimens to keep our bodies away from diseases.

According to Ayurveda, winter is one of those times of the year when our body’s immunity and strength high. The digestion strength is so strong during this time that your body is capable of digesting any food, irrespective of the quantity or heaviness. However, it is important you take a few precautions to make the winters more enjoyable.

Here are a few Ayurvedic health tips for the winter season.

1. Since early winter is associated with Vata, follow a Vata-balancing diet. Include plenty of fresh fruits and well-cooked vegetables in your diet.

2. Eat warm and well-spiced foods and drink warm or hot beverages. Avoid iced drinks.

3. Start your day with a self-oil massage – it is very helpful in this season.

4. Excessive stress can aggravate Vata. So, avoid stress and tension as much as possible.

5. Your lunch should be the largest meal of the day. During this time, the sun is at the highest in the sky and thus, the internal digestive fire is the strongest.

6. Since the sun sets earlier in winter, make it a regular habit of going to bed by 10 pm. Irregular bed timings can aggravate Vata.

7. Protect your body from the cold wind as it increases Vata in the body. Wear warm clothes and a scarf to keep your body warm.

8. You also need to exercise regularly to maintain optimum health. Walking or yoga are considered good forms of exercise.

Follow these simple measures, and you can go a long way in maintaining good health all through winter.
