Rosy cheeks are not always pretty. There are many causes of redness and flushing of the cheeks. It is quite important to first determine the cause of the problem before jumping to the solution. Though there are many reasons for redness and lushing, the most common causes of blushing cheeks are either an eczema or rosacea.

Rosacea has different components to it. The first is trigger based i.e. when high temperature or an ingested component causes flushing and redness on the cheeks due to dilated blood vessels. The pink rosy hue will iminish in a few days once the trigger is eliminated.

The second instigator, and a slightly serious one at that, isbecause of broken or damaged blood capillaries on your cheeks. The redness is more intense and the effects last for longer.

Eczema is more of an itchy rash, and is usually instigated by a certain product that does not suit the skin.

It is proven that 9 out of 10 times the redness or flushing in cheeks is due to rosacea or eczema.

Triggered Flushing

Well, your lifestyle sure does need introspection if your flushing and redness is trigger based. If the redness is caused post exercise, then that doesn’t mean that you stop working out. You could try this- add some  elenium in water, and spray it on like a mist, the coolness of the water and the minerals in the selenium will calm your skin and reduce the redness.

To determine food based flushing, you will have to closely watch your food habits. Once you have pinned the culprit, you can avoid or substitute those foods with better ones. You can also check for an alcohol-based trigger, as alcohol is also known to cause flushing.

Damaged Blood Vessels

If a blush on your cheeks is an ongoing problem, it means you are dealing with damaged blood capillaries. There are two solutions to this; a long term one, and a short term one.

To get rid of red cheeks permanently, the best fix would be to get a laser based treatment done. It will kill the broken blood vessels, and your cheeks will return to normalcy.

There are some temporary fixes as well. There are many FDA approved drugs (can be taken orally or can be applied as an ointment on the affected area) that are readily available in the market that you can use once you have your doctor’s approval. These products contract the blood vessels, thus help drain some color off your cheeks. But the effect will last only for about 9 hours, after which, the redness will return.

Rosacea With Acne

This one’s an increasing problem among most people today, owing to the raging sun. If you are suffering from Rosacea, it is best to consult a dermatologistwho will probably prescribe antibiotics. But as a preventive measure, you could start using a good mineral based sunscreen, and avoid exposing your skin directly to the harsh rays of the sun.

Generally Speaking

It is essential to pay heed to your skin care regime if you suffer from eczema or rosacea. To begin with, use a mild cleanser. You would also need to use a good moisturizer, and it is most recommended to use a lotion that has glycerin or ceramides in them. It helps to repair and soothe your skin.

You must be fully aware of the ingredients present in your skincare products. The lesser the ingredients, the better the product. It is best to avoid cosmetics with fragrances.

Here are a few Do’s and Don’ts to keep in mind while caring for affected skin:

  1. Use antioxidant and peptide rich anti-aging products as against the retinol based products. Retinol is known to irritate the skin.
  1. Avoid hot showers as it might aggravate the inflammation.
  1. Avoid being trapped in a hot car, or being surrounded by a dry atmosphere.
  1. Natural is good, but be aware of the organic products you use, and try to identify what works and what doesn’t for your skin.

Don’t let the sun ever be a deterrent to your confidence. Treading with a little care will do wonders for your skin, leaving you looking glowing and beautiful.
