10 Shocking Facts We Bet You Didn’t Know About McDonald’s

Written by StyleCraze  •

Admit it, there isn’t a dieting resolve that can resist the sight of a McDonald’s hamburger and a bag of fries. Whether it is a day out shopping, hanging out with friends, or even a mad working lunch at the office, they have been our go-to since forever. How well do you know them, though?

1. They First Sold Hot Dogs, Not Hamburgers

Gasp! In 1937, their first format was The Airdrome, a food stand on Huntington Drive in California that sold hot dogs. Followed by the McDonald’s Bar-B-que store in 1940 selling just barbecue items. It wasn’t till 1948 that hamburgers made an entry on the menu cards! McDonald’s, as we know it, was born on December 12, 1948.

2. One In Eight Americans Is A McDonald’s Employee

Americans don’t just love their burgers but make a living off them too! The “Happy Meal” factory is the largest employer in America hiring about, hold your breath, a million job seekers annually. They don’t pay well, though, with the lowest wages in the country, and least benefits and zero skill addition. No wonder it takes an average McDonald’s employee seven months to earn what a CEO makes in an hour.

3. A McDonald’s Restaurant Opens Every 14.5 Hours

Did your jaw drop already? Present in 119 countries, with 40% of these stores in the U.S.A alone, they are expanding every single day, entering newer markets. Well, going slow on new stores never got anyone $28 billion in revenues annually, did it?

That familiar McDonald’s M is one of the most recognizable logos in the world, iconic for its bright, sunny, golden arches. Not in Paris, Champs-Elysees though, where it is in white neon to blend in with the lights on the street. Sedona, Arizona has one with turquoise arches. Did we tell you this logo was also more popular than the cross? Well, we did now.

If you ever thought that stepping into their stores would not harm your health plans, well, let’s just say, we pity you! The McDonald’s Caesar salad is more fattening than their hamburger. Fries, shakes, burgers, salads, colas every item on the McDonald’s menu is a ticket to obesity-ville. Don’t take our word for it. Try living on their menu for a week, and get on to the scales to see for yourself.

6. They Are The Largest Distributor Of Toys In The World

That’s so obvious, right! The Happy Meal toys delight kids and adults alike. Haven’t we all queued up outside their stores every time our favorite superhero film released? And, they are free! Well, you pay for the meal they come with, but then, that’s just you being too picky with the details, darling.

7. McDonald’s Is Not The World’s Largest Restaurant Chain

Yes, as much as the fangirl in you would like it to happen, they aren’t the world’s largest restaurant chain. That crown is taken by Subway, the healthy salads and sub joint we see across the world.

8. There Is A McDonald’s University

Yes, we aren’t kidding! Neither are they. They take making hamburgers way too seriously. Hence the university. Over 80,000 people have graduated from this place with a degree no less in Hamburgerology. And you thought all it took was to slap a piece of ham between two slices of a bun, eh?

9. They Ask Their People To Avoid Junk Food

So what if the world cries obesity every time one takes their name? McDonald’s website for their employees advises them to avoid junk food. For health reasons, of course.

10. The Big Mac Is An Economic Index

Because nerds love their hamburgers too! The Big Mac is used to compare purchasing power between currencies and countries. That is some serious swag, don’t you think?

Now that we have enlightened you with this eye-opener, would you look at your favorite hamburger the same way ever again? You can thank us later!
