Do you find yourself worrying about your hair every time you comb it? Are you afraid that you are gradually losing those tresses each day? Then you need to evaluate your lifestyle and see if your habits are affecting your crown of glory!

There are many aspects which contribute to hair fall: Stress, lifestyle, age, and genetics to name a few. However, we first need to understand when exactly hair fall becomes a problem. Experts say that we lose around 100 strands of hair every day (1). So, if you pull a bunch of your hair and you find only 8 to 10 hairs in your hand, you need not worry. But when the number of hairs is more than 15, then it is a sign that you need to take care of your mane right away.

So, here are some tips to tackle this problem. These are simple habit corrections that one needs to follow to take care of the hair fall and boost the growth.

1. Proper Hair Wash

Washing your hair regularly will help you get rid of the excess dust and dirt that are responsible for the hair fall. People who have a dry scalp should avoid over-washing the hair. For an oily scalp, washing hair too rarely can also cause further damage. Additionally, do not comb your hair when it is still wet as this will increase the breakage.

2. Use Healthy Hair Products

First of all, understand your hair type and then choose the products that you require. The right kind of shampoo will do wonders for your hair! No matter what, do not select products that have sulfates, parabens or silicone in it.

3. Hairdos

Whether you believe it or not, your hairdos can cause a lot of damage to your hair. Tight braids, pony tails or buns can affect the roots of the hair and make them loose. If you are already suffering from hair loss then avoid over styling your hair on a daily basis. Limit these only for special occasions.

4. The Right Hairbrush

Choose a wide-toothed comb (preferably wooden) to comb your hair. This is the best option when you need to untangle your hair and avoid unnecessary pulling and breakage. Also, clean the comb regularly.

5. Protection From Excess Heat

Although we may not use styling tools very often, but a hair dryer is a necessity these days as it saves a lot of our precious time. Nevertheless, sadly, the heat from the dryer makes our hair brittle. So, try to minimize the use of the dear dryer and let your hair dry naturally. Same is the case with taking a bath with very hot water. Use warm or lukewarm water for your baths.

Similarly, avoid exposure to excess sun. Try to cover your hair if you are going out in the sun for a longer period of time.

6. Proper Exercise And Meditation

Like any other part of our body, stress affects our scalp and hair too. Proper exercise will help you increase the blood circulation and also fight the blues. Meditation will help you relax and keep calm in stressful situations.

7. Massaging The Scalp Regularly

Another great way of stimulating the blood circulation is a good massage. This boosts the hair growth. A visit to a good spa for such massages can be a good idea. Although, gently massaging your scalp with some oil at home can be beneficial too.

8. Correct Food Intake

Your food intake directly affects your hair. While the correct kind of food enhances your hair growth and texture, the wrong ones can damage it a lot. So, avoid or decrease the intake of soda, excess sugar, white bread, and greasy foods. Try to include healthy foods such as eggs, green vegetables, carrots, nuts and seeds, and salmon. These types of food are packed with proteins, vitamins, and irons, which are good for the overall health.

9. Giving Up Unhealthy Habits

Other than giving up unhealthy food habits, there are some other unhealthy habits that are responsible for the hair loss. Smoking and regular alcohol consumption intoxicates the body. These can cause irreversible hair damage. So, try to cut down on these habits or avoid them completely for beautiful skin and hair.

10. Know When To Visit A Doctor

Understand the type of hair fall you are experiencing. If it is a sudden onset, then this can be a sign of some other serious illness that needs medical attention (2). See if you are facing any other health issue along with hair fall. Visit your doctor immediately and get proper treatment.

Although these are simple habits, it can be a lifestyle change for many. It will not be easy to completely change it overnight. But try to look at the long-term benefits you will get out of it and work towards that goal; slowly but surely you will reach there.

Here’s to a start of happy and healthy hair days!
