Have you been struggling to get even a few hours of undisturbed sleep every night? It can be a real pain to be active and productive the next day when you have not slept sufficiently the previous night. An irregular sleeping pattern can cause you more harm than you thought it could. The body heals and repairs itself at night. It prepares itself for another day, and when you deprive it of the sleep, it goes haywire the next day.

After trying tons of remedies, what finally worked for many people was this wonder spice, nutmeg. Nutmeg is a spice that was initially found in the Indonesian islands. It has been in use for its culinary and healing purposes for a long time now. Nutmeg is rich in antioxidants and vitamins like B-complex and folic acid. In the olden days, it was used not just as a sedative agent but also as an aphrodisiac and an anti-depressant.

However, since our focus is on its sleep-inducing properties, let us stick to that. All you have to do is grab a pinch, and the next thing you know is you are cuddling away with your pillow and dozing off like a baby. Well, not that it works instantaneously like a sleeping pill, but give it 15 minutes to half an hour, and the effect is almost same.

The miracle component lurking inside the nutmeg is called trimyristin. The oil that can be extracted from nutmeg consists of 80% of this substance. No wonder it works so well as a sedative. This chemical helps in releasing all the tension in the muscles and nerves of the body. Do you feel everything is “getting on your nerves” when you don’t have a good night’s sleep? This irritability is because of anxiety that doesn’t allow you to calm down or relax the body. To be able to sleep better, your body first needs to calm down – and that is exactly what nutmeg does. You will stop clenching, and you will see the stiffness in your body gradually diminishing.

Here are some ways in which you can ingest nutmeg to bid bye-bye to insomnia forever.

Caution

  • In right doses, nutmeg is excellent to induce sleep. But be careful not to overconsume it. In high doses, it can cause nausea, palpitations, and in some extreme cases, hallucinations.
  • Also, a variety of nutmeg was once used to cause abortion in pregnant women. Ingesting in low quantities or for culinary purposes is not dangerous, but do not in any circumstance have more than the prescribed amount.

Lack of quality sleep for prolonged periods can create debilitating consequences like a weak immune system, increased risk of heart diseases and stroke, anxiety, disorientation, and high blood pressure. Insomnia, quite astonishingly, proved to be a cause of many road accidents. Experts say a drastic decrease in libido or the sex drive can be a direct result of insomnia. Insomnia, in itself, is a great source of concern. Added to it is the extended list of problems it can cause. Although sleeplessness could look like a huge unconquerable demon, in reality, it requires only slight changes in lifestyle and the right dietary choices to put you in a deep slumber.

Ditch the sleeping pills and embrace this yummy natural sedative that will put you to sleep in no time!
