What Does The Shape Of Your Buttocks Say About Your Health?

Written by Chandrama Deshmukh  •

It is quite intriguing that each of our body shapes is different from the others. No two people on this planet have the exact same shape. We all are different and unique creations of God. Different body shapes hints at deposition of fats in different parts of our bodies. There are specific hormones in our body that dictate the storage of fats. A distortion in the function of these hormones is what leads to different body shapes. This could also mean a variety of health issues associated with one’s weight. You may be surprised to know this but even the shape and size of your buttocks tell a lot about your health!

In the present generation, a majority of men and women are conscious about their body and appearance. While many struggle to lose those unwanted pounds, there are also a few who are trying to gain some fat in all the right places! In women, the fat is often stored in their hips, breasts, thighs, and buttocks (1). Whereas in men, the scenario is quite different. Men tend to store fat around their tummies. These body parts tend to store fat rather easily. However, getting rid of this body fat is quite difficult, especially when it is the cellulite kind.

For women, it is a hormone called estrogen that directs the storage of body fat in our hips and buttocks. This hormone is secreted by our ovaries. In fact, it is due to the secretion of estrogen that our body undergoes many changes while nearing puberty.

The fat stored in our butt is referred to as gluteofemoral fat. Our buttocks are made up of a group of muscles called gluteal muscles. Gluteal muscles consist of three individual muscles named Gluteus Maximus, Gluteus Medius, And Gluteus Minimus. Among these, it is the Gluteus Maximus group of muscles that gives our butt its shape.

According to a study published by International Journal of Obesity, an increase in the gluteofemoral fat mass is said to be independently associated with a protective lipid and glucose profile and also results in a decrease in cardiovascular and metabolic risk (2).

Inspite of studies favoring the fat in our junks, we must strive to maintain a healthy weight overall. Because obesity could often turn lethal in the long run.

Let us now have a look at the different shapes that our rears come in and the health benefits and drawbacks associated with it.

1. Square Trouble

A square-shaped butt often indicates that the fat is stored in the area above it or accumulated evenly around the junks and lower back. Individuals having this shape have weak gluteal muscles and sometimes tend to store fat around their tummies. However, there are a number of simple exercises to address this issue.

2. Round Around

Having a round butt is considered attractive. It also indicates that the individual is in good health. A round butt has a little of excess fat, both above and below it. Thankfully, the fat at the bottom of the rear is easy to get rid of. The fat stored at the top does not pose any health concern.

3. I Heart You

This shape is a dream come true for all women out there! These rears start as fuller from the bottom and taper as they reach the waist. Although immensely attractive, a heart-shaped butt hints at possible fat accumulation in the abdominal area. This could also result in health problems later in life. So, it is wise to exercise regularly and steer clear of any health issues.

4. Inverted Like A V

A drop in the estrogen level is directly related to an inverted rear. Older women often have low estrogen levels and therefore, this shape of buttocks is most common among women of older age. Exercises concentrating on the abs and glutes can prevent fat accumulation at the top of the rear.

Having a big butt is often considered to be an asset for women. Researches suggest that women with bigger buttocks are smarter and more resistant to chronic illnesses related to obesity. Big buttocks are said to require higher levels of Omega-3 fats, and this, in turn, is proven to catalyze the development of one’s brain. Women with bigger trunks are also found to be having lower levels of cholesterol, and thus, production of hormones to metabolize sugars are more likely in women with bigger rears (3).

However, this doesn’t mean that being obese is healthy. Everyone with a BMI above normal must continue to strive to reach a healthy weight. But yes, for ladies with bigger trunks out there – as far as you are not overweight, you can continue to flaunt your assets as much as anyone thinner. Howbeit, with additional benefits!
