We all love to sleep. It is very important for maintaining our health and the proper functioning of our organs. Moreover, the duration of sleep also matters a lot for our physical and mental well-being.

Umm…you might have heard about the importance of duration of sleep, but why all the fuss about the position in which you sleep? Does the side really matter? And if yes, how does the side on which we sleep have a role in maintaining our health?

Well, science says, yes, the side in which you sleep matters a lot, and it is always preferred to sleep on your left side. Let’s take a look at how it helps.

People prefer sleeping in positions they are comfortable in. Some sleep on the left side, some on the right, whereas some people prefer to sleep on their back. Some even sleep on their tummy. All these positions have a role to play where your health is concerned.

Sleeping on the back supposedly causes breathing problems, and thus, the position is not advised for people suffering from asthma or sleep apnea. Sleeping on the left side can improve your digestion whereas sleeping on the right can worsen digestive problems. Each side has a different effect on your body, and out of all positions, science as well as Ayurveda suggest that you should sleep on your left side.

Benefits Of Sleeping On The Left Side

According to holistic medicine, the left side of our body is where the lymphatic organs are dominant. When you sleep on your left, your body gets more time to filter the toxins, fluid, and wastes through the lymph nodes and the thoracic duct. Sleeping on the right side may slow down the functioning of the lymphatic system.

Some other benefits of sleeping on the left side are as follows:

1. It Can Help In Relieving Back Pain.

People suffering from chronic back pain may notice improvements by sleeping on their left side. It can relieve the pressure on the spine and make you feel comfortable.

2. It Is Good For The Heart.

Sleeping on the left side improves the circulation of blood and also helps to take off some pressure from the heart.

3. It Is Great For Pregnant Women.

Sleeping on the left side is the ideal position for pregnant women. It helps in relieving the pressure from the back, and increasing the blood flow to the uterus, fetus, and kidneys.

4. It May Help In Reducing Heartburn.

Gastroenterology also supports sleeping on the left side as it can help in reducing the acid reflux symptoms.

Now that you know the benefits of sleeping on the right side (which is the left side), why wait? Just switch your position!

If you’re not habituated to this sleeping position, it may take a while to adjust. However, these tips may help your body to adjust to this sleeping position faster.

  1. Sleep on your left side and keep pillows at your back. If you try changing your position, the pillows will stop you from rolling.
  1. Keep a dim lamp on the right side of your bed. This will make you turn your back towards the light.

Make a small change in your sleeping habit today and get rid of your daily health problems.
