  • This is a great styling option for people who want to try different looks with their protective style. Since the extensions are sort of sewn into your braids, your hair color, texture, volume, length, or curl pattern does not get altered.
  • Synthetic hair is a better choice than human hair for crochet braids. As the braids start wearing out, it transforms into a messy, boho look and looks cool till the end. Human hair may end up looking unkempt with this style.
  • Ideal products for crochet braids maintenance are conditioners for co-wash, hydrating serums, deep conditioning masks, and shine sprays.
  • Compared to other protective styles like box braids or twists, installing and uninstalling crochet braids is less time-consuming. A professional can remove them within 30 minutes to an hour.

THE CROCHET BRAIDING PROCESS

A big reason why crochet braids are so ‘in’ right now is the fact that you can add loose hair extensions and the end result is that they look like natural hair. But it doesn’t have to stop there! You could also insert box braids or Marley twists! The options are endless! But before we get to the styling part, let’s look at what the crochet braiding process actually involves:

  1. Hair wash: Wash your hair. Thoroughly. Crochet braids usually last for about four weeks, and you will not be able to wash your natural hair properly during that period. So, it’s better to start out with absolutely clean hair.
  1. Cornrows: Braid all your hair into cornrows to create the base for your extensions. This is a great crochet braid pattern tutorial that you can follow to get flawless crochet braids.
  1. Inserting loose extensions:

a. Insert your crochet needle into the first stitch of your cornrow, with the latch closed.
b. Open the latch, insert your hair extension right from the middle, and close the latch.
c. Pull the crochet needle and extension back out of the cornrow until the extension forms a loop, then remove the crochet needle.
d. Pull the tails of your extension into the loop and tighten until the loop closes.
e. Tie a knot with the two tails of your extension to secure it in place.

  1. Inserting braids:

a. Insert your crochet needle into the first stitch of your cornrow, with the latch closed.
b. Open the latch, insert one end of your braid, and close the latch.
c. Pull the crochet needle and braid back out of the cornrow until the braid is about 2 inches through.
d. Open the latch and push back the end of the braid up and over the latch.
e. Insert the other end of the braid into the latch and close it.
f. Pull the tail of the braid out of the loop at the top of the braid and tighten it before removing the needle.

Nafisat, a blogger, shares her experience of braiding her hair and flaunting her crochet braids for the first time. She writes, “I have tried different styles from curly hair to updos to wearing it down, wearing it straight, ponytails and scarfing but here is one prominent style I love (i).”

Well, now that we have the boring stuff out of the way, let’s dive into the fun ways that you can style your crochet braided hair!

protip_icon Quick Tip
The entire process of installing crochet braids can take 4-6 hours. Be careful not to pull your hair or knot the extensions too tightly to avoid breakage and hair loss.

Give your hair a beautiful twist with the butterfly crochet braids. This hairstyle requires you to attach pre-braided faux butterfly locs to cornrow braids with the help of a crocheting needle. After looping the faux loc to your braid, you need to wrap it around your real braid to give it a natural freehand and textured look. The little loops of the faux hair create an illusion of butterfly wings, giving you a new creative hairstyle. You can customize your looks with different butterfly locs. Go for colored locs for a bold look or attach rings and beads to the hairstyle for a glamorous and edgy look.
