A few years back, a beer shampoo hit the markets. Ever since then, many people believe that beer is a miracle hair care ingredient. Beauty bloggers claim that beer makes the hair glossy and healthy and stimulates hair growth. Does it really work? Scroll down to find out.

Is Beer Good For Hair?

  1. Beer contains minerals like selenium, silicon, zinc, magnesium, calcium, iron, potassium, and sodium (1), (2).
  • Selenium: Studies show that a selenium deficiency can cause loss of hair color and hair loss (3), (4).
  • Silicone: Silicones are often used in shampoos, serums, and conditioners. Silicones are easily absorbed into the hair. They reduce frizz and make hair shine. Dimethicone is known to protect hair from damage like abrasions (5). Siloxy silicate increases hair thickness. Polysiloxane polymers act like glue and keep the fibers of the hair shafts stuck together. They also protect hair from heat damage (5).
  • Zinc: Zinc aids hair growth by inducing protein transformation. Alopecia is a sign of zinc deficiency (6). Two case studies showed a connection between zinc deficiency and hair loss. Research shows that when given zinc supplements, hair regrowth was stimulated.
  • Magnesium: Magnesium is required for protein synthesis (7). Protein synthesis helps break down cells to form hair and helps improve hair shaft thickness.
  • Calcium: Calcium has shown to affect hair growth. Research shows that calcium is needed to maintain hair, especially in women experiencing menopause (7). An animal study showed that calcium deficiency could lead to hair loss (8).
  • Iron: Beer contains trace amounts of iron. Iron deficit is shown to cause hair loss related to female pattern hair loss (9). It might also cause premature graying of hair. Iron can also help regulate unregulated genes in hair follicles (6).
  • Potassium: Potassium also helps with protein synthesis. Potassium channels are known to regulate hair growth (10).
  • Sodium: Sodium, when taken in moderation, helps hair growth. A study showed that sodium paired with silicone helped induce hair growth in mice (11).
  1. Beer also contains B vitamins, like riboflavin, biotin, folate, niacin, and pantothenic acid. Research shows that a deficiency in these compounds, although rare, results in hair loss (6).
  2. Most of the compounds used to make beer, like quercetin, tyrosol, ferulic acid, alpha-bitter acids like humulone, and beta-bitter acids like lupulone, are polyphenols (12). These polyphenols have antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. This may help keep the scalp clean from infections, protect the hair, and improve hair health.
  3. Beer contains protein, which is essential for hair growth. A study shows that the hop extract, used to make beers, can stimulate hair growth and reduce hair loss (13). It prevents the 5-alpha-reductase from forming DHT, which causes hair loss. It also stimulates keratinocyte proliferation, which helps in hair growth (13).
  4. Beer contains albumin, which is a plasma protein. It helps carry minerals, essential fatty acids, and vitamins to different parts of the body. It can also help protect hair from damage. It also provides amino acids for cell breakdown.
  5. Anecdotal evidence suggests that beer makes hair shine and helps with scalp conditions like psoriasis.
  6. The ferulic acid present in beer has antioxidant and antimicrobial properties (14). This may help keep the scalp clean and improve scalp and hair health. It also has anti-inflammatory properties, which suggest that it can help soothe irritations and burns on the scalp.

Note:  When using beer as a hair rinse or mask, always use flat beer. Carbonated beer might aid free radical production that causes hair damage by oxidative stress.

How To Use Beer For Hair Growth

1. Beer Rinse

Although there isn’t much research, anecdotal evidence suggests that a beer rinse helps remove build-up and dirt from your hair and scalp. It may also help balance the pH of the scalp. The silicone in beer can help reduce frizz.
