10 Effective Home Remedies To Treat Popping Ears September 20, 2017

Blocked ears are quite a pain. Is your cold preventing you from hearing clearly? Did you return from a flying trip only to have painful un-popped ears? Either way, you want to pop those ears as quickly as possible, right?  Then you have come to the right place!

This post talks about the top home remedies that can help you treat blocked ears. Would you like to know more? Read on!

Why It Happens:

Our ears are complex structures that do more than just helping us hear. The ear comprises an inner, middle and outer ear. Here, the middle ear is connected by the Eustachian tubes to the back of our throats (1). These tubes help drain fluid from the ears. They have another important function. When we yawn or swallow, the flow of air equalizes the pressure between the inner and outer ears in relation to our environment.

Occasionally, the negative pressure from an altitude change or fluid buildup from allergies blocks the Eustachian tubes. This causes a pressure difference, where the pressure outside is too high. Pressure variation between our ears and the environment causes ear pain along with hearing issues and popping noises. Treating blocked ears is easy. To achieve this, we need to tackle pressure and infection separately.

Home Remedies For Popping Ears From Pressure:

1. Valsalva Maneuver:

Sudden altitude changes are best handled with a Valsalva maneuver. The move applies gentle pressure on the middle ear and Eustachian tubes, thereby easing the pressure.

Here’s how you do it. Close your mouth, pinch your nose and try to exhale slowly. Ease out your breath, and you would feel a slight pop in your ear. The maneuver opens up the ear. But ensure you don’t force the breath out and worsen the pain.

2. Yawn Widely:

Yawning helps air flow into the Eustachian tubes (2). You don’t have to actually yawn for this, but just imitate the action. Open your mouth as wide as possible imagining you yawning. Ensure your head is tilted back as if you are looking at the sky. Keep the jaw pointed forward. You will feel your ears pop mid-way through the yawn. If not, repeat the movement.

3. Chew Gum:

Chewing gum is an effective way to unclog ears from pressure variations. Sudden pressure variations when a flight takes off or lands causes worry for many. Chew gum during either a takeoff or a landing to relieve extra pressure from the ears. This opens up the Eustachian tubes and unblocks the ears. To make it work, the piece of gum should be quite large.

4. Drink Water:

Swallow water while you pinch your nose. This should pop your ears from the swallowing action. Use a large glass of water. Take one gulp, close your mouth, pinch your nose, and swallow with your head tilted upwards. The movement helps open the Eustachian tubes.

5. Use Gravity:

This is useful for people who return from a dive. Divers face considerable ear trouble during their endeavors (3). If there is water/pressure pain in your ear, tilt the blocked ear towards the floor. Place your index finger over the ear canal and make tapping motions over it like a plunger. You should be able to bring gentle pressure change to pop the ears.

Home Remedies For Popping Ears From Infections:

6. Water Gargling:

Heat a glass of water to a temperature warm enough for your throat. Mix a spoonful of salt and gargle repeatedly until the water finishes. Try again after a 30 minute break. This will help clear infections, as ear infections are a major cause for blockage (4).

7. Steam Inhalation:

Inhale steam to rid yourself of clogged ears from a cold. The steam relieves you from mucous while also loosening earwax. Pour steaming water into a large bowl and add lavender essential oil and tea tree oil. Inhale the steam with your head covered until the ears open up.

8. Hot Compress:

Ear blockages from sinus congestion can be treated with a hot compress. Hold a cloth dipped in hot water over the ear for 5 minutes. It will drain the fluid and relieve pain.

9. Olive Oil With Garlic:

This can be used for treating infections in the ear as garlic is a natural antibiotic. Heat a spoon of olive oil with 2 cloves of peeled garlic. Cool the oil and apply it to the ear with a cotton pad.

10. Hot Water Bath:

Hot water baths are very effective in treating many aches and pains. Try soaking in steaming hot water, ensuring your ears are dipped too. This will loosen the mucous inside, relieving pain.
