Eucalyptus trees, grown mostly in the Southeast Asian subcontinent and the Australian archipelago, contain ingredients that have therapeutic effects on human health. There are several species of Eucalyptus, but ‘Eucalyptus globules’ is the one that is used widely for medicinal needs (2). In fact, the bark, leaves, and oil of the tree – all are used for medicinal needs in various parts of the world. However, it is the eucalyptus essential oil that is known for its robust healing properties (3). It is also used a lot for aromatherapy purposes. The oil is extracted from the tree leaves.
Eucalyptus oil can be used to get relief from nasal congestion and sinus inflammation. The oil is a powerful disinfectant and contains anti-inflammatory agents too. However, you should remember that the oil, in its pure form, can be quite strong, and care should be taken before you use it.
There are 3 main ways of using eucalyptus oil to treat sinus and nasal congestion. These methods are:
This is what most sinus patients and those with a blocked nose prefer (4). You will need to fill a tub with steaming hot water. Now, pour a few drops of eucalyptus essential oil into this tub. Next, wrap a towel over your head and sit on a tool. Leaning over the hub, inhale the steaming vapor and let it get into your nostrils. Do it for a few minutes or until you feel relieved from the pain or blocked nose. This method works fast on sinus headache and soothes nasal congestion as well.
This is the method you can choose when the nose blockage or sinus is quite intense. You will need to mix eucalyptus oil with a carrier oil. Carrier oils help in reducing the strength of the essential oil, and make it more tolerable for your skin and organs. You can mix a few drops of eucalyptus oil with mild carrier oils like olive or almond oil. After mixing both the oils, you can apply the mixture topically on the chest and throat.
Some people also choose to apply pure eucalyptus oil on the skin for relief from sinus and clogged nose. However, ensure you take a very small amount of the oil to avoid burning the skin.
While using eucalyptus oil for getting relief from nasal congestion and sinus inflammation is a good idea, certain precautions should be taken. Remember that the oil, in its raw form, can burn your skin (5). Those with skin issues and sensitive skin should not apply the oil in its pure form at all. In fact, they should be careful when using the oil in its diluted form as well to avoid a burning sensation. Eucalyptus oil should not be used on kids, more so in the topical way. Those with asthma should refrain from using it, as doing so can trigger asthma attacks. Women who have conceived should avoid using this oil as well.
