Ever had that dreaded feeling in your chest, as if something bad is about to happen? Do not mistake it for your sixth sense; it is actually your heart beating out of tune. If you experienced heart palpitations, then you know the fluttering feeling can be more than just excitement.
But worry not, these palpitations can be controlled by using simple natural remedies. Would you like to know what they are? Then take a moment and have a look at this post!
The heart is one of the most important organs in our body. So, let us first understand why our heart slips out of rhythm sometimes. Heart palpitations are disturbances in the regular heart beat. Also called cardiac arrhythmias, they make you feel like your heart has skipped a beat (1). There is a distinct drumming in the chest brought on by heartbeats that are too fast and hard. It is only obvious that they fill us with anxiety.
However, in most cases, heart palpitations are not serious and subside on their own. With safe interventions, they go away sooner. Few people with medical conditions should consider palpitations seriously as they may hint towards something worse. Those flutters may mean congestive heart failure, coronary artery disease or heart attack. Palpitations accompanied by chest pain, dizziness, fainting, chest pain and shortness of breath are sure signs of a trip to the emergency ward.
Most Common Causes:
For the rest, there is a variety of other reasons for palpitations (2). They could be external, hormonal or psychological. Causes include:
- Excessive nicotine, alcohol and caffeine intake
- Consumption of illegal drugs such as cocaine, marijuana and amphetamines
- High levels of physical activity
- Low blood pressure, low blood sugar, dehydration, electrolyte imbalance
- Hormonal changes in thyroid disease, pregnancy and menstruation
- Medications like asthma inhalers, decongestants and certain supplements
- Panic attacks
- Fear, anxiety and stress
If your heart is skipping a beat or racing every few minutes for any of these reasons, try out these natural remedies and find immediate relief.
1. Cold Water:
It is the simplest and most effective remedy in the book to calm palpitations. Drink cold water to help your heartbeat find its rhythm once again. Dehydration makes the heart highly prone to low blood pressure and irregular beating. A glass of water also helps decrease anxiety.
Alternately, you can also immerse your face in ice-cold water to shock your system into restoring to normal function (3).
2. Spinach Or Fish Oil:
These foods are rich in magnesium, which is a mineral that doctors use as a supplement to treat heart palpitations. We say, why go for supplements when you can cook delicious food and share it with your family? Have magnesium-containing foods such as spinach, fish, peanut butter, pumpkin seeds, almonds, bananas and even dark chocolate. Any of these will correct the magnesium deficiency, reducing palpitations (4).
The herb is a popular cure for anxiety and is known for its efficient sedative qualities (5). Anxiety induced heart palpitations can be treated with valerian because of its relaxing effect. Just drink a glass of water with a few drops of liquid Valerian for relief.
Cayenne acts as a stimulant on the heart muscle and can smoothen out heart arrhythmias. It enhances overall heart health by balancing circulation and strengthening the muscle (6).
Cinnamon has numerous protective components for our health. Drink warm water mixed with a spoon of cinnamon powder to naturally control heart palpitations. This will also reduce high blood pressure.
It acts by calming anxiety levels that may have led to palpitations (7). Lavender infused baths are known to ease panic attacks and calm down excessive brain activity.
Motherwort also cures heart irregularities by making the organ stronger. The herb was used traditionally by people prone to nervous temperaments and associated heart conditions (8). Motherwort also helps the circulatory system with its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.
Hawthorn stabilizes cardiac muscle contractions by enhancing blood supply to the heart. It also strengthens the walls of the blood vessels.
9. Passion Flower:
This herb has many therapeutic applications, one of which is heart palpitations (9). It can cure insomnia and ease anxiety, thereby relaxing both the nervous and cardiac systems.
10. Lemon Balm:
Consume lemon balm in your tea whenever palpitations are worrying you. It works as a tonic, helping to relax you. Also use it if there are any hormonal disturbances.
Heart palpitations can also be caused by overeating as the blood supply would rush to the stomach and away from the heart. Living a healthy lifestyle should completely prevent the flutters altogether.
