Did you know that excessive hemp seed oil usage can trigger hallucinations and paranoia? Well, it’s true! Hemp seed oil has many benefits, but when used irresponsibly it can lead to many complications like paranoia, among others. Hemp seed oil is the oil extracted from the seeds of the hemp plant, a cousin of the notorious marijuana plant. No wonder hemp seed oil triggers hallucinations!
We all know how ‘excess is bad’. Hemp seed oil is no different. So, if you are using hemp seed oil, or are considering it, you might want to read this post and decide for yourself.
Let’s look at some side effects of hemp seed oil:
1. Cardiac Risk:
Hemp seed oil is especially rich in polyunsaturated fats like omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids (1). Although omega-3s and omega-6s are essential to the body, excess presence of these acids can lead to cardiac conditions, bacterial infections and other complications.
2. Digestive Problems:
Hemp seed oil is used widely as a cooking agent. This is especially harmful to you if you have a disposition to stomach problems. It can induce diarrhea and cramps. Steer clear of hemp seed oil if you are suffering from stomach conditions and bowel movement disorders.
3. Mildly Explosive:
Although hemp seed oil is used as a cooking agent, overheating the oil can release noxious peroxides that are harmful to the body. The peroxide can damage organs, tissues and even the skin. The peroxide is mildly explosive and can catch fire. Remember to use hemp seed oil mostly on warm and cold dishes (2).
Although hemp seed oil will not have you seeing stars in the day, it can lead to aural hallucinations. Hemp seed oil contains THC, which can induce hallucinations in some people, although most people might not even realize it. This is because the THC content in hemp seed oil is close to zero. If you are overly sensitive to hemp seed oil, you should stop consuming it (3).

5. Blood Coagulation:
Hemp seed oil can adversely affect anticoagulants and blood platelets that can lead to the thickening of blood. Blood clotting can lead to a heart attack. People with blood clotting deficiencies and disorders can treat such conditions by consuming hemp seed oil. However, you might want to speak to your physician and thoroughly discuss about hemp seed oil benefits and side effects before its usage (4).
6. Tumor Cell Regeneration:
Hemp seed oil triggers the reproduction of cells which heals the body. Hemp oil is thus an excellent remedy for skin conditions, which require constant cell regeneration. Scientists say that a poly-unsaturated fatty acid or PUFA rich diet can increase the risk of prostate cancer. As hemp seeds trigger cell reproduction, the can also lead to cancer cell reproduction as well. If you have a propensity towards prostate cancer, you should not consume hemp oil. This is considered as one of the most dangerous side effects of hemp seed oil as it can lead to death.
7. Immune Suppression:
PUFAs can cause all sorts of problems in excess. PUFAs are immune suppressors that reduce the efficacy of the immune system. Hemp seed oil is crammed with PUFAs, which mean that it has a direct effect on the immune system. Although PUFAs treat inflammation and promote heart health, immune suppression can lead to bacterial growth and other infections.
8. Brain Development Problems:
Research shows that neurons require omega-3 fatty acids. As hemp seed oil also contains omega-6 fatty acids, eating too much of this oil can lead to excess acidity and a fatty acid imbalance, which leads to different brain development problems.
9. Unsuitable For Pregnant Women:
Studies show that consuming hemp seed oil during pregnancy can have adverse effects. If you are pregnant or are breast-feeding, you should avoid using hemp seed oil.
