One of the earliest known uses of copaiba oil is as an effective disinfectant. Studies show that certain chemicals in Copaiba Balsam have strong anti-microbial properties. It kills bacteria, germs, and fungi. It can be administered orally (under prescription or supervision of a doctor) or can even be used externally (1).

2. Topical Analgesic:
It has been demonstrated that copaiba oil is an effective analgesic (painkiller) for wounds, rashes, bug bites, boils, and dermatitis. It also helps cure pain caused by arthritis and back problems. Its topical uses range from the treatment of wounds, rashes, boils and pain, to the treatment of nail fungi.
Copaiba balsam oil is a natural diuretic. It owes its diuretic nature to the oil it contains. When separated from other components during digestion, this oil enhances kidney functionality. Although an excess of copaiba can cause complications, and patients with a predisposition for kidney ulcers are advised against using copaiba, in regulated doses it acts as a diuretic.
Copaiba was traditionally used as an expectorant, and has since been used to treat bronchitis. Drinking a measured dosage of copaiba oil can help clear congestion, treat cough and has even been used in treating respiratory disorders like asthma and bronchitis; it helps suppress cough and expel phlegm. It may cause indigestion and stomach upsets in some people, and hence the most advisable thing is to take it under directions of a doctor.
5. Reduce Cellulite:
Copaiba’s external uses are not limited to simply treating rashes and acting as an analgesic. Studies have shown that regular application of copaiba oil can help you reduce the cottage-cheese flab that you are so cautious of. The oil can be massaged into the thighs, hips and buttocks to reduce cellulite.
6. Supple Skin:
We know that copaiba oil is used both internally and in topical application. Apart from relieving pain and helping cure rashes, hemorrhoids and other cuts and bruises, copaiba oil can also be used to make your skin softer. It helps in the regeneration of collagen, the tissue that lends our skin its elasticity. Regular application of copaiba oil can help you get softer skin.
7. Anti-Inflammatory Agent:
Copaiba oil has been considered an effective anti-inflammatory agent, one which helps the inside and the outside of the body evenly. This property is what makes copaiba such an effective anti-inflammatory agent. However, the oil is toxic, and should be taken under the supervision of a medical practitioner.
8. Removes Moles:
There is still some controversy surrounding the use of copaiba to reduce moles. It is believed that copaiba oil, when combined with carriers, lessens the spread of moles. It is also believed that continual use can reduce its size and normalize its color.

9. Decreases Scars:
Copaiba oil has a myriad of uses. Its topical properties make it such an important ingredient in skin creams and dermatological products. The regular use of copaiba oil can help reduce scars. Many women apply copaiba oil to reduce and remove stretch marks post pregnancy.
10. Combats Stomach Problems:
Copaiba oil has been known to provide relief from stomach ulcers, and in some cases, even stomach cancer as well. Some studies have been able to identify anti-chaperone activity, while other studies remain unclear on the anti-carcinogenic properties of copaiba oil. However, regulated doses of copaiba oil can help soothe stomach ulcers (2).
Copaiba oleoresin thus has many medicinal benefits and side effects. However, studies have been unable to conclusively tell us what copaiba oil is most effective on, often only hinting at incomplete studies and possible benefits. But then, traditional medicine lauds copaiba oil, and it has been believed to provide most of the benefits listed above.
