7 Common Skincare Mistakes That You Should Avoid Making

By Niharika Nayak

Taking good care of your skin should be an extremely important part of your skincare regime. People usually consider that skincare should be paid extra attention only in your 30s. However, the 20s are a crucial period to start so that you don’t have to rely on products too heavily as you grow older. If you’re someone who doesn’t really care about their skin, now is a good time to get started. You may seem to have flawless skin but it could be undergoing slow deterioration which requires some tender love and care. It’s also important to note that your skincare regime during the summer months should be totally different from your skincare regime during the winter months. Also, when it comes to taking care of your skin, there are certain rules that you must follow. We’ve noted down a list of seven common mistakes you might be making when it comes to your skincare routine:

1. Picking A Product Right Off The Shelf

Whether you are someone who prefers products that are organic, ayurvedic, or products that contain chemicals, you must do some thorough research before you decide to purchase the product. Not all skincare products suit you in the same way, even if they look very appealing. Don’t just pick up the first product that you find on the shelf as you might not know if it’s suitable for your skin type or needs. Instead, determine what your needs are and purchase the products accordingly. Also, make sure not to use your basic set of skincare products from different brands. Find a brand that suits your skin and stick with it. It’s okay to mix one or two products but make sure the ingredients are compliant with your skin.

2. Not Cleansing Properly Before Bed

Yes, we’re talking to you! We understand the need to crash after a wild night of partying, but you have to make it a point to take your makeup off before you hit the sack. Whether you are someone who wears heavy makeup or someone who goes basic, it’s important to go to sleep with a fresh face and a clear mind. You can use baby oil and a cotton pad to wipe off your makeup and give your face a sixty-second face wash right before you crash. Your facial skin needs a fresh reboot for the next day.

3. Not Washing Your Neck

We don’t blame you for not knowing the importance of washing your neck as well as your face. Many of us are under the assumption that only our faces need to be cleansed and washed properly. However, our necks are also a magnet for dirt and grime. Since our necks are super sensitive and delicate and the skin on our necks is prone to aging, we need to ensure that we take good care of the skin on our necks and keep it as clean as we can. When you are using facewash, you need to extend the foam to your necks for equal proportion. The same goes for your moisturizer.

4. Over Exfoliation

While it is extremely important that we exfoliate our skin at least twice a week, we need to ensure that we do not go overboard while exfoliating. If you’re someone who uses physical exfoliators, you need to be even more careful and not go too rough on your skin. Remember that the skin on your face is extremely delicate and if you’re someone who has dry or combination skin, you might end up making it worse. Don’t scrub your skin more than once a week if you are someone who has dry skin.

5. Not Using Sunscreen

Sure, you might think having a darker skin tone will prevent you from being affected by the sun as harshly as someone with a fairer or lighter complexion. However, this is completely false and having darker skin will not lower your chances of being affected by sun rays. If you are planning on spending a day out in the sun, it is important that you apply at least a small amount of sunscreen. If you’re someone who doesn’t like the concept of rubbing a thick lotion on yourself, you can opt for a sunscreen that is more water-based or sunscreen that is specifically catered to those with oily skin.

6. Using Undiluted Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is quite a strong ingredient and while it is quite the boon for your skin, using it undiluted can cause irritation, burning, and a painful stinging sensation. Instead, you should always dilute it with water and do a patch test before you decide to apply it on more sensitive areas of your skin. Apple cider vinegar is one of the best things you can add to your skincare routine. Even if you don’t want to apply it topically, you can try drinking it with water or warm water and honey to get the best effects possible.

7. Expecting Your Routine To Work Overnight

If you’ve started a new skincare routine, it would be silly to expect it to work so quickly. It is important to give your skincare routine the time it needs to settle in and for your skin to accept it. You must make sure that you don’t break free from your skincare routine just because you aren’t getting the results that you desire yet. At the same time, if you have been following a steady skin care routine religiously for three months and haven’t seen a change in your skin yet, then you should definitely consider opting for a new skincare routine.

The only thing that is important is that you catch your skincare mistakes early on and nip them in the bud. It is a mistake to assume that the more product you use, the more effective it will be on your skin. Sometimes, excessive usage can lead to skin abrasion and early damage. This can propagate loose skin and hence, early wrinkles. Having a solid skincare routine is crucial for every single person.
