11 Tips That Can Help Reduce Or Hide Face Bloat

Written by Niharika Nayak, BA (Media & Communication)  •

Under-eye puffiness is usually an indication that fluid has accumulated in your eye bags. It must be frustrating to sit for a virtual meeting or even meet someone outside at a short notice with puffy eyes or a bloated face. If you’ve noticed that your face has been bloating more often than not, then there could be a variety of reasons why this is happening. Allergies, water retention, snacking on salty foods, and having a poor sleep cycle are just a few of the many factors that lead to you waking up with a puffed-up face. And when you notice that your face is swollen up, it’s hard to even look at yourself in the mirror this way. So if you’ve been looking for ways to reduce or temporarily hide your puffy face, look no further! We have a list of eleven tips that can help you reduce or, at the very least, disguise your bloated face:

1. Green Tea For The Win!

Green tea is excellent when it comes to getting rid of a puffy face. Not only can you drink the beverage and get a good dose of antioxidants and polyphenols, but you can also use the leftover tea bags to depuff your eyes! Just let the teabags cool a little bit first.

2. Cucumber

There’s a reason why so many spas use cucumbers while giving you a facial massage. That’s because cucumber slices are enriched with vitamin C and folic acid. These can help stimulate antioxidants to fight off any external toxins that are making your face appear swollen. Since cucumber is high in moisture content, it can cool your eyes and give your skin a very refreshed look.

3. Gua Sha Stone

A Gua Sha Stone can help your face look less puffy as well! All you need to do is massage your face by starting from the center of your face. After you’ve finished doing that, start massaging outwards towards the side of your face. After that, use the stone to move it towards your neck (which is where your lymph nodes are located). Repeat at least thrice and do it delicately.

4. Consume Enough Potassium

If you want to avoid suffering from a puffy face, then you need to stop snacking on unhealthy fried foods, processed foods, canned soup, deli meats, and more. These can increase the level of water retention in your body as they have high levels of salt content. One way to avoid this is by sticking to a healthy diet and eating plenty of tomatoes, bananas, and apples to ensure you get the correct dose of potassium. Potassium is essential for the smooth functioning of the system, and it can help control the water that you retain in your body.

5. Cold Water

When it comes to making your face look less puffy, cold temperatures can be of great help! You need to wash your face with cold water, apply a cold compress, or use an ice roller. The coolness will minimize swelling, reduce face bloat and constrict your blood vessels. This will then minimize face bloat by a huge amount.

6. Wear Earth Toned Makeup

Applying neutral and earth-toned makeup to your eyes, lips, and cheeks is a smart way to ensure that people don’t stare at your face for long. If you use a graphic eyeliner or a siren red lipstick, then people will instantly notice that your face is bloated. Since color tends to draw attention, it’s a better idea to go neutral.

7. Strobing

Strobing is a makeup technique that involves illuminating certain spots of your face to give the skin a healthy and bright look. You need to apply a highlighter to spots where light naturally falls on your face. These areas include the highest points of your cheekbones, the bridge of your nose, your cupid’s bow, the middle of your forehead, and of course, the area right above where your eyebrow arch.

8. Sculpt With Blush

Another smart way to disguise a puffy face is by using a blush that has a brown undertone. It’s a little bit like contouring but with less of a hassle. Brush the blush under your cheekbones, up till the middle of each of your ears, and then blend it outwards towards the apples of your cheeks. This can help give your skin a healthy glow and work like contour but in a much more subtle way.

9. Reduce Salt And Sugar Content In Your Diet

We understand that you really love those chips but trust us, ditch them if you want to avoid ending up with a super puffy face. You should also avoid consuming carbonated drinks, sugary sweets and always check for sodium levels in the products you are purchasing.

10. Increase Your Intake Of Fiber

Fiber is something that is essential for the smooth functioning of our gastrointestinal systems. They help to keep your intestines and stomach healthy, and this, in turn, will keep your face looking much leaner. Make sure that you load up on fruits that contain beta-carotene, vitamin C, and antioxidants, as this can help prevent water retention. Vitamin C will also leave your skin with a bright and healthy glow.

11. Workout

Working out is an effective way to reduce the puffiness in your skin. Weight training and cardio can help improve the blood circulation in your face and open up your pores. If you combine exercise with a balanced diet, it will be easy for you to avoid bloating on any part of your body, be it your face or your tummy. Also, practice exercises that target your jawline and double chin.

Let’s face it, a puffy face is not a selfie face. The face bloating may not sound like a major life-threatening situation, but it sure is irritating when you have places to be and look presentable. Maybe tone down with those tempting cocktails and oily foods to at least make a bloated face manageable, or even better, take a note of the above-mentioned points to help you sail through your days feeling and looking fresh. If you follow these tips and still see that your face looks puffy, it is most likely that there is some underlying health cause for it. So, consider consulting a doctor.
