How often do you hear about makeup artists starting their own cosmetics line because they are not happy with the existing ones? That’s sure not common! But, Bobbi Brown, a makeup artist, went the uncommon way. She started a makeup brand of her own, with products that were going to rule the makeup industry one day. Here’s her story:

Bobbi Brown’s Brand

Bobbi Brown was a professional makeup artist who was known for her distinct makeup style in the 1980s. She was unhappy with the unavailability of suit-all shades and tones in her makeup palette and decided to work on her own line. She wanted to create makeup that was natural-looking and easy-to-use.

Bobbi Brown Essentials launched its first line products – 10 brown shaded lipsticks, which went on sale at Bergdorf Goodman in New York City – in 1991. Over 100 lipsticks were sold on the very first day. The following year, the brand launched a line of yellow-toned foundations. The idea behind the launch was to make sure that everyone who needed a foundation would find a suitable shade at the brand’s counter.

The makeup created by the brand aimed at helping women embrace and enhance their beauty without having to mix or blend shades. The brand worked on fulfilling every woman’s needs: to look and feel like herself, only prettier and more confident. They went with the mottos, “Be Who You Are” and “Less is More.”

Estee Lauder bought Bobbi Brown Essentials in 1995, prompted by the brand’s global success. Brown retained her position in the company and continued working on making it better. In December 2016, she stepped down from her position.

Currently, the brand is available in more than 74 countries and sold in more than 2100 stores globally. The brand sells 46 products every minute, i.e., about 23 million products annually.
