The caffeine overdose calculator is the perfect tool to measure your daily caffeine intake. This tool is excessively handy when you desperately need that mug of coffee but unsure whether you’ve had enough. In a matter of seconds this calculator accesses the amount of caffeine in your blood and tells you if you have exceeded your safe caffeine limit or can go for more.

How to use the caffeine overdose calculator

The caffeine overdose calculator can be used to ascertain the total intake of caffeine from three different sources.

  1. Choose a caffeine source from the given list.
  2. Enter your day’s intake of this caffeine drink.
  3. Repeat the first two steps for every caffeine source.
  4. The calculator will display your total caffeine intake on the screen.

You can choose from the following list of caffeine sources:

  • Cup of tea (190 g): 50 mg per cup
  • Mugs of filter coffee (350 g): 140 mg per mug
  • Mugs of instant coffee (350 g): 100 mg per mug
  • Cans of cola (330 ml): 40 mg per can
  • Energy drinks (250 ml): 80 mg per can
  • Shots of espresso: 45 mg per shot
  • Cups of green tea (190 g): 40 mg per cup

How much caffeine should I have a day?

The maximum amount of caffeine consumption of an individual depends on his/her age, gender, and health condition. The maximum daily dose of a healthy person should not exceed 400 mg which is equivalent to three large mugs of filter coffee. Exceeding this might affect your sleep or cause other health issues.

However, for people with health conditions, such as high blood pressure, the daily safe caffeine dose might change. In such cases it is advisable for you to consult your doctor for a recommended daily caffeine intake.

Safe Caffeine Limits for Children

Consumption of caffeine is altogether discouraged in young children. For adolescents (aged 12-18) no more than 100 mg is advised which is equivalent to two shots of espresso. The adolescent’s body is still developing, hence, too much caffeine may lead to health issues. Too many cokes or caffeine induced energy drinks must also be avoided as it will also lead to obesity in young adults.

Check your caffeine intake in pregnancy

Though caffeine is a great stimulant, pregnant women are advised to check with their doctors for their daily limit. This is because, during pregnancy caffeine is metabolized more slowly and takes much longer for the body to eliminate it. Research shows that caffeine also crosses the placenta and enters the baby’s bloodstream, raising concerns that it can affect the baby’s health. Usually less than 200mg is considered a safe intake amount.

How much caffeine is too much?

Relax, an extra cup of coffee will not kill you. As per research caffeine overdose is most likely to happen from taking a dietary supplement or caffeine tablets rather than from drinking coffee. Supplements increase the risk as they have concentrated levels of caffeine compared to foods and drinks. A lethal caffeine dose would be around 150 milligrams per kilogram of body weight.

Though reaching a lethal dose is a rare possibility, exceeding the recommended amount of 400mg on a daily basis might lead to insomnia, increased heart rate, muscle tremors etc. So go ahead and calculate your daily intake and be sure to stay within the advised limit.
