Although mainstream television in our country has often had a questionable reputation in terms of storylines, and character build ups, the fashion choices were quite interesting. Some of the shows’ styling may have come across as cringy but oddly enough seemed to spark a trend among youngsters. While shows like Hannah Montana, That’s So Raven, and others were quite popular, our Hindi channel viewers got to watch a lot of interesting shows as well! Many of us grew up in the domination period of Doordarshan or basic TV channels and found ourselves watching some of these fun shows. Let’s take a look at some popular 90s shows that had interesting styling:

1. Remix

This popular show was released in the early 2000s and catered to suit the tastes of young adults and teenagers. Remix centered around a cast of four teen characters and was well-appreciated for its “non-saas-bahu” storyline and being a bit more modern. The lead characters had very fashion-forward outfits and featured future heartthrob Karan Wahi.

2. Hip Hip Hooray

Hip Hip Hooray was a true gem of a show and brought back some childhood nostalgia of school days and hostel life. The costume department of this show certainly did a brilliant job at styling and bringing back those old-school feels. We were often left in a nostalgic haze after we watched this show.

3. Sarabhai vs Sarabhai

“Monisha beta!!” Every 90s kid can remember the sounds of Ratna Pathak Shah calling out to her daughter-in-law in her up-tight, hoity-toity voice. This show was one of the early shows that taught us the concept of wealth disparity. It showed Maya Sarabhai dressed in elaborately designed and classy ensembles while her daughter-in-law, Monisha followed a more low-key sense of dressing.

4. Shararat

This magical show about fairies was a delight for many of us to watch as kids. If you owned a fairy barbie and watched Shararat, you truly were an elite! Everyone of us wanted to get our hands on an item from the super peppy and fun Jia’s closet. And who could forget her sassy grandmother and concerned mother? This show was fun, thrills, and complete magic and it was much loved by every 90s kid.

5. Mahi Way

Mahi Way truly was a show that was ahead of its time. In recent years the concept of body positivity has caught on and people are growing more accepting of all kinds of body shapes. The show followed the life of a young plus sized girl and how she navigated the world around her. It featured a progressive storyline and the lead character was probably one of the best styled on the show.

6. Rishta.com

Before the era of Tinder, Bumble and Hinge, there was an era (and arguably still is) of matrimonial websites. Rishta.com is a throwback to that time and follows the storyline of four good friends who run a matrimonial website and have to also deal with their own personal lives. The show featured a compelling script and the characters were styled in modern and contemporary styles of clothing.

7. Shaka Laka Boom Boom

Who can forget wanting to own the magical pencil featured on the show Shaka Laka Boom Boom? The super popular show probably inspired thousands of kids to pick up art and stick to it. Everything from the kids’ outfits to the adults’ more serious sense of styling was taken into notice and the show definitely excelled at drawing us in.

8. Captain Vyom

Bollywood hunk and lover of streaking across beaches, Milind Soman is mostly known for his incredible looks and numerous charitable causes towards running. Many might not remember his role as Captain Vyom in the 1998 series Captain Vyom. For the uninitiated, Captain Vyom was probably one of our first tastes of Indian sci-fi and Milind Soman totally owned that role. He played the captain of a team that had to capture criminals who had escaped from a high security prison in space. The styling on this show was super futuristic and wacky. We had to give mad props to the creativity of the styling and fashion department.

9. Tara

This show, like Mahi Way, was also well-ahead of its time and showcased that women could work and have modern lives. Tara was probably our first real taste of the concept of feminism and independence as women and the show definitely inspired some critical thinking. The leading characters were all styled exceptionally well and the show is truly inspiring to watch. It ran for a full five years and was the first Hindi-language drama to focus on contemporary and urban young Indian women.

Indian shows have come a long way and with the advent of online streaming platforms, many previously unnoticed talent has been brought to the limelight. While most of us may be drifting further and further away from our television screens and closer towards our mobile screens, we should give credit where it’s due and commend the shows that we enjoyed during our childhood years. Do tell us which of these television shows were your favorite while you were growing up and what you loved the most about them.
