Recent studies indicate that people with brown eyes are the most honest and trustworthy people. But wait, that’s not the entire story! The study is just preliminary.
About The Study
Research was conducted under the team lead Karel Kleisner to find out whether the color of the eyes can influence the perception of trustworthiness or not. This was published in the journal PLOS ONE (the Public Library of Science). For this research, they initially photographed 40 men and 40 women with either brown or blue eyes. Then, they asked 238 participants to rate the photographs based on perceived attractiveness or trustworthiness on a scale of 1 to 10, where 1 meant trustworthy/ attractive/ dominant, and 10 meant untrustworthy/ unattractive/subordinate.
To cross-check whether the color of the eyes solely affected the perception or not, the research team swapped blue eyes digitally onto brown-eyed people and vice versa. And the results showed that people with brown eyes were rated as more trustworthy than people with blue eyes, while the blue-eyed ones were rated more attractive than the brown-eyed people.
But can we trust these results? Not yet. Even after digitally switching the eye colors, the results remained pretty much the same. Then, the researchers tried to include another factor as well, i.e. the facial structure. After measuring the results by incorporating the factor of facial structure, they found out that people with bigger eyes and broader mouths were perceived to be more trustworthy. But how do we come to any conclusion with this outcome?
The researchers then found out that such facial characteristics are usually associated with people who have brown eyes. Blue-eyed people normally have longer faces with smaller eyes and eyebrows that are farther apart.
The Conclusion
A few researchers say that more research on the relationship between face structure, eye color, and trustworthiness has to be done in other demographics to arrive at a definite conclusion.
