The world of celebrities is filled with pomp and show. Every life decision, professional and personal is under the lens of the media and it is difficult for them to keep their life under wraps. Every move of a celebrity is under scrutiny and people do not hold back on their opinions about celeb lives. When something wonderful happens in a star’s life, like marriage, birthdays or engagements, there are tons of people who give unsolicited advice which can be most annoying. The media never fails to partake in this activity and sometimes forgets that Bollywood stars are human before they are the celebs of the glamorous world.

Sometimes, relationships do not work out and it is important to get out of a bad marriage rather than staying in it. Granted that divorce is still a taboo in our country and most of the time actresses bear the brunt of the criticism, but that did not hold these actresses back. They stuck to their guns and called off marriages because they envisioned a better life for themselves outside the marriage. Today we bring to you such actresses who have not only been bold and uncaring of society’s judgment but have also reached levels of success after their divorce.

1. Aditi Rao Hydari

Aditi Rao Hydari, the bloodline of the royal family of Hyderabad was married at an early age of 17. Due to several reasons like lack of compatibility and the age gap between her husband and her, she called off the marriage. She was just 21 years old when she separated from her husband. Soon after, she debuted in the film industry and acted mainly in south Indian films. None of these films brought her success until her divorce was finalized. Coincidence much? Finally, the actress rose to fame with her blockbuster performances in movies like Delhi 6 and Rockstar which paved her way into Bollywood’s stardom.

2. Chitrangada Singh

She was married to Jyoti Singh Randhawa for 13 long years before they got a divorce in 2014. The couple has a son named Zorawar and the two of them share custody of him. The model turned actress, Chitranganda rose to fame after her role in Desi Boyz starring the popular Bollywood stars Akshay Kumar, John Abraham, and the gorgeous Deepika Padukone.

3. Kalki Koechlin

She is smart, talented and is not afraid to stand up for what she believes in. The Indo-French lady of Bollywood made her debut in Dev D and received much admiration. She fell in love with film director Anurag Kashyap and after a courtship of about three years, decided to get married in 2011. However, they had several differences in their relationship and filed for divorce. Kalki and Anurag maintain a cordial relationship and have continued to work together even after their divorce in 2014. She recently announced the news of her pregnancy with her Italian boyfriend Guy Hershberg. Kalki is known for her unconventional roles in movies and speaking up about issues concerning women. She has acted in super hit films like Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara and Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani amongst others.

4. Mallika Sherawat

The sensuous actress, Mallika Sherawat started her career as a model and did small-time advertisements. She was married to Karan Gill but they got a divorce. Soon after her divorce, the Murder actress rose to fame with several bold roles that she acted in. She is known to be one of those actresses who do not talk much about their personal life.

5. Rakhee Majumdar

Known as the golden girl of the industry, Rakhee Majumdar debuted in Jeevan Mrityu in 1970. She was married to Ajay Biswas, a journalist turned Bengali film writer in her teens. Reports say that he was not supportive of her career and that caused fights in their marriage. They eventually separated but Rakhee wasn’t much of star at the time. Coincidently, soon after the divorce, she rose to fame with her movie Sharmilee and received many accolades in her career. Later on, she married the Oscar-winning film director and lyricist, Gulzar and is the mother of Bollywood director Meghna Gulzar.

They say marriage can tie people down if you do not find a spouse who supports you and understands your aspirations. That seems to be true with these actresses who received success and fame after getting out of their marriage. It is almost like divorce has been a blessing for them and their careers. Separation from their husbands brought them luck and they soar to success.
