It’s that time of the year again. The stage is set, the outfits are ready, and the makeup is locked and loaded. The last Indian woman to win Miss Universe was Lara Dutta in 2000. If Adline Castelino does bag the crown, she’d be among an elite list of 9 Indian models who won the crown at any of the big 4 international beauty pageants (Miss Universe, Miss World, Miss International, and Miss Earth). As of 2020, only two women representing India bagged Miss Universe, Sushmita Sen in 1994 and Lara Dutta in 2000. Our favorite Jonas sister, Priyanka Chopra also bagged the prestigious Miss World title in 2000 making it a second double win for India (the first was in 1994 with Sushmita and Aishwarya). Lot’s to live up to, right? Here’s why we believe Adline Castelino is going to make us proud on the global stage:

Adline Castelino is a 21-year-old Kuwaiti born model who hails from the coastal city of Mangalore. She first participated as a model in the year 2014. The gorgeous lass won the title of Miss TGPC (The Great Pageant Community) at the ripe young age of 19 before moving on to participate in full-fledged pageants. At that time, the aspiring model was in her second year of Business Management. After winning the competition, Adline excitedly spoke about how ecstatic her parents were back in Kuwait when she relayed the news to them. She also stated that her Indian community in Kuwait was also extremely supportive of her dreams and ambitions just as her parents were.

The young model has always been extremely interested in pursuing a career in fashion and started preparing a portfolio of her work at a very young age. After her Miss TGPC win, Adline started bagging features in fashion magazines, photoshoots and even walked for popular clothing lines. The leggy lady was crowned by former Miss TGPC, Bhairavi Burad and had battled it out against 18 other contestants to make it to the top.

Before their entry onto the grand stage, the aspiring debutantes were trained and groomed by industry diva, Lara Dutta. Speaking on her role and guidance towards the women, the actress said, “It has been an incredible journey. All the young ladies are victors, but there can only be one true winner. It was extremely difficult for the judges to pick that one winner out of a line up of all these gorgeous divas who were all genuinely talented and promising. The winner will be extremely deserving, and I want to wish all the ladies a lot of good luck as they remain on the very edge of a splendid future. I’m awaiting the Miss Universe pageant and I hope to see us bring the crown this year.”

Earlier in the day, Padmaavat actress, Deepika Padukone took to social media to share a message with the top twenty contestants of Miss Diva 2002. The starlet wished the contestants the best of luck and urged them not to worry about the results and enjoy the process instead. Considering that Deepika herself is a major fashion icon and has worked with some of the biggest names in the industry, we’re sure the contestants were happy to hear her advice. Kuch Kuch Hota Hai star Kajol, too took to social media to wish the 20 women good luck. The actress said, “I wish all the miss Diva girls very very happy hunting and I think all of you are fabulous just the way you are.”

Before the stage was set, there were auditions held in major cities across the country in November 2019. Some of these included Lucknow, Hyderabad, Pune, Chandigarh, Bangalore, and Ahmedabad. The final part of the audition was held in December 2019 and the 20 girls who would go on to the finals were chosen. The aspiring divas took part in an elaborate four city sub-contest which was later followed by a thematic night. The finale also saw exuberant performances by actors Jacqueline Fernandes and Ishaan Khatter.
