How To Rock The Airport Look Like A Celebrity

Written by Chandrama Deshmukh  •

If you’ve been keeping up with the news, you’re probably aware of how travelers have been getting into trouble while boarding planes for their less-than-acceptable clothing. From T-shirts sporting choice curse words, pants dangling around ankles to attempting to board in actual lingerie – certain fashion choices have not only raised eyebrows, but tested the patience of airlines and (surprise, surprise) lost.

However, with the increasingly stringent demands airlines are making regarding the clothing of their passengers, is it even possible to look passable, let alone chic? Well, inspired by the recent trend of airport looks on Instagram, we decided to look at what veteran fashion aficionados had to say regarding in-flight garb. And, boy oh boy, consider us enlightened.

Unlike the so-called fashion-ignorant masses who bemoan the loss of their boots, belts, and heels at the security clearing, these vogue trendsetters view the American, Transportation Security Administration – TSA’s guidelines and rules as a challenge waiting to be won with a killer yet practical travel ensemble.

Though these fashion experts may pack extravagant haute couture in their checked baggage and carry-ons, their actual in-flight attire is starkly different. Here’s what they recommend you wear during your next trip to look chic yet stay comfortable!

Always Keep It Simple: A Designer’s Point Of View

According to designer Carmen Marc Valvo, it’s best to dress in a hassle-free way that allows you to cruise through security without having to resort to stripping. As a frequent flyer who happens to make a minimum of 10 work-related trips every season, his go-to airport look is fixed: a solid colored, lightweight T-shirt combined with classic black jeans or a comfortable pair of trousers that don’t require donning a belt.

If the season permits, he takes the casual up a notch by wearing a pair of comfy yet smart flip-flops or even a pair of loose boots he can easily kick-off when needed. Additionally, he always sports his go-to travel jacket so that he isn’t required to pack it.

Alternatively, for women, he advises a lightweight pant attire or even a not-too-fitted dress along with a soft sweater around the shoulders, topped with a pair of practical yet cute footwear.

For this fashion veteran comfort is always key when traveling. “Dress all in black or in (other) solid and neutral colors. You don’t have to dress it up. Keep it solid and keep it simple,” he counsels.

Stay Casual Yet Put Together: A Model’s Advice

American fashion model, Amy Lemons, happens to fly to Europe every other week due to work, and by now, she has her airport look down pat. She advocates looking ‘put together’ even if you do have to dress casually.

“I don’t wear anything tight because I usually sleep, so it’s lightweight cotton dresses from the Gap or Zara” or even some comfy capri pants, says Lemons. “I usually wear Toms or some other kind of slip-on shoes. I never wear heels on the plane! Or belts.”

When asked about her biggest fashion no-no, Lemons was swift to respond: No sleepwear. She says she can empathize with wanting to be comfortable, however, one must draw the line when in public.

Don’t Neglect The Face: A Fashion Editor & Stylist’s Pointers

One of the fashion industry’s most sought-after and influential celebrity stylist, Jacqui Stafford says she barely sports any makeup while travelling by air. Her reason – Why bother? Though she boards the plane with a comfortably clean face that allows her skin to breathe, nevertheless, she does swipe a quick coat of hydrating lip gloss as she explains her lips can get somewhat dehydrated while travelling.

Additionally, Stafford will also be found carrying some wet wipes and moisturizing face cream in her travel bag in order to refresh her skin and achieve a dewy complexion once she lands. She also recommends the use of cosmetic eye decompress pads post-landing, to combat puffy, travel-worn under eye bags.

Stafford’s pet airplane fashion peeve? People donning tacky, baggy tracksuits. She explains that though these people may think they look invisible when they’re travelling – they don’t. According to her, just because one happens to be flying doesn’t mean they mustn’t even make the remotest of efforts to appear stylish.

Never, Ever Don White: A Trendy Flight Attendant’s Tips

Jet-Blue flight attendant, Tracy Christoph, strictly advises against wearing white garments when flying. Christoph explains that in her experience, travelling can be a long and taxing affair, and a white ensemble can be a pain to clean if there happens to be a spill.

She also recommends against linen clothing. Though it may be comfortable, Christoph warns that it can look notoriously wrinkled once you step out of the plane. Since everyone wants to appear tidy and presentable once they’ve reached their destination, it isn’t the best of ideas.
