Style is a deeply personal thing. However, trends still prevail and we end up finding people wearing more or less the same clothes as everybody else. While some fashion trends are extremely wearable and look good on anybody, certain others are just ridiculous and almost tasteless. Sadly, these anti-trends are still followed by people, including you and me, and we could surely do without them.
Let’s take a look at 12 anti-trends of this year and what they can be replaced with-
1. Tracksuits
The tracksuit has moved out of the confines of the 4 walls of the gym and has turned into streetwear. All thanks to the celebs! We won’t deny the comfort factor of these clothes but it really doesn’t look good when you show up in a tracksuit for a lunch date, does it?
Replacement: If you want comfy clothing, nothing beats the classic combo of white tee paired with blue jeans. Loose, cotton pants can give extra comfort that denim doesn’t.
2. Tulle Skirts
Oh, as pretty and dreamy as they may look, fashion bloggers all over the world are completely aghast by the tulle skirt! They no longer rule the ramp or the streets. So it might be time to get rid of your tulle skirts.
Replacement: Midi skirts are quite the rage right now. You can try them on in fabrics such as satin or silk. Long pencil skirts are a good alternative too!
3. Colored Braces
Yes, this medical dental item which was always meant to be hidden rather than flaunted is pretty much shown off these days in colorful hues! We personally think that it’s not cool to show off your braces in garish colors. We could be wrong, but if you trust us, please get rid of them.
Replacement: Transparent braces are the way to go! These let you flash your pearlies without looking like a palette of colors. You can also go for braces that stick to the inner parts of your teeth.
4. Backpacks
As comfy and multipurpose as backpacks might be, their run on the fashion scale is sadly over. They won’t be seen anywhere by the end of the season!
Replacement: Don’t want to sacrifice on the spaciousness of a backpack? This season is all about oversized clutches and handbags anyway, so you won’t be missing out on much!
5. Mirror Shades
Nearly everyone — from brides-to-be to beach babes were seen sporting mirror shades 4 to 5 years ago! Doesn’t that say it all? 4 to 5 years ago? It’s time to say goodbye.
Replacement: The shades you need to look cool this season are those with extremely narrow or oversized frames. Even John Lennon-style round glasses are still trending! Just be sure what you pick suits the shape of your face.
6. Furry Slippers
These cutesy little flip-flops are best worn in two places — the bedroom or the bathroom. Anywhere else now is a big no-no!
Replacement: The most stylish are those that are able to channel simplicity in all its glory. You can continue wearing open-toed, thin soled flip-flops with no embellishments. These are both comfy and elegant.
7. Berets
This French hat that’s worn lopsidedly really doesn’t serve any purpose if you come to think of it. It doesn’t protect you from the weather and neither does it look good with anything you wear! So, why do you still wear it then?
Replacement: There are so many other hats to choose from (that are both stylish and useful)! Go try out hats in a store before buying them to know what looks good on you.
8. Flash Tattoos
Blame these on Beyonce, maybe? After introducing her line of flash tattoos, Queen Bee left women with a trend that is borderline tacky. At least in the present times!
Replacement: Your body is beautiful naturally. So try leaving it unmarked. This allows for more experimentation such as pretty necklaces, bracelets and more!
9. Thick Soled Sneakers
Okay, this trend is still pretty much raging in India but it’s dead in the West. No stylist there recommends you to stick your feet in heavy, blocky sneakers anymore.
Replacement: Sneakers are all about comfort and regular sneakers completely fit the bill. If you’re looking for more stylish options, try getting the limited edition sneakers of famous brands (send us one too)!
10. Bandage Dress
Styles that are too sexy are out. Now, it’s all about being classy and subtly sexy! That’s why you should throw out your bandage dresses, with their thick fabrics, for good.
Replacement: Dresses in natural fabrics that allow you to breathe are the new sexy! Feminine cuts and silhouettes will add elegance to your look.
11. Lacy Chokers
Lacy or leathery, chokers are a trend that don’t make sense anymore. They look no different than a dog’s collar anyway. And, it definitely doesn’t look pleasant on kids!
Replacement: Light and beady necklaces that don’t widen your neck look much better! Plus, their femininity makes them perfect for dress occasions.
12. Torn Shorts
High-waisted shorts with torn ends have gone out of style, and so have those with embellishments and glitter on them!
Replacement: Loose shorts that sit on your mid-hips are the way to go. These look great in denim and other natural fabrics!
In the end, you don’t have to blindly follow trends. You can always create your own style and look as good as any famous fashion diva! If it suits you, go ahead and wear it, else give it a miss.
