Armpits Care Routine To Make It Beautiful Again

Written by Shivani K •

We all spend enough time perfecting our winged eyeliner, setting our hair right, getting the best shade of contour and subjecting our nails to great nail art. But, while most of us pay more attention to hair, face, nails, many amongst us miss out on caring for and maintaining a very important part of our body — our underarms.

A majority of women opt to shave their underarms to get rid of the unwanted hair. And with affordability, convenience, and lower pain levels on its side, it is quite plain as day to see why this option appeals to so many women. But what they fail to realize is that every time they reach out for that razor and shave their underarms, they are shaving a third of their underarm skin as well. And repeated shaving leads to dryness, irritation, and redness as well. There are chances that the skin will become bumpy and turn dark in color too.

If after reading this, you still want to continue with shaving your underarms to get rid of unwanted hair, you will have to do a lot of TLC afterward. And to help you with that, we’ve put down a detailed armpit care routine and here it is:

1. Checking Your Antiperspirant

If you’ve been noticing that your underarms have turned red, bumpy, and inflamed, then we would advise you to have a look at the ingredients section of your antiperspirant. An antiperspirant does exactly what you think it will; wherever it is applied, it blocks the sweat from coming out there. Most of the antiperspirants contain aluminum salt in them, which blocks the pores of your underarms (1). But the presence of this ingredient can also cause irritation to the skin of your underarms. Most antiperspirants also contain alcohol. This might affect our skin negatively when it comes in contact with them (2). Therefore, check for these ingredients in your antiperspirant and if it contains them, don’t buy them!

2. Moisturize Your Underarms

You need to understand this simple fact peeps — just like other parts of our body, even our underarms have epidermis, which will thank you if you moisturize it. Moisturizing skin prevents it from withering and this rule applies to your underarms as well. And we suggest you apply some lotion after shaving and even before applying antiperspirant. Choose a light moisturizer to moisturize your underarms and keep them beautiful.

3. Exfoliate

Human skin generally takes around four weeks to renew itself and as we age our skin takes even more time to renew (3). But, you can speed up the cell renewal process if you regularly exfoliate your skin. Exfoliation is known to remove the dead skin cells and help restore the health of the skin. Exfoliating your underarms will help you make them smooth. But make sure you use a mild exfoliator; you don’t want to end up with rashes. Use your hands or a soft cloth to exfoliate. And make sure that you don’t do it more than twice in a week.

4. Opt For Skin-Lightening Treatment To Battle The Dark Areas

Were you all aware that wearing tight clothes, putting antiperspirant regularly, and plucking hair can cause the skin around underarms to darken? Well, it’s true. However, problems like hyperpigmentation (a condition where there is a sudden rise in the melanin production) can also be blamed for the darkened skin of the underarms.

In order to treat the dark skin, we can make use of several skin lightening treatments. Some of which can be using bleaching agents that help fight hyperpigmentation or chemical peeling which helps lighten the skin. These treatments take time and start to show results within a couple of weeks (it depends from person to person) (4).

5. Consider The Alternatives To Shaving

There are many other hair removal methods that we can make use of. Shaving causes burns, redness, and inflammation, and when you’re aware of the cons why not look for an alternative? The clean, aftershave look can last for just a couple of days. Whereas, if you wax your underarms, you can have hair-free armpits for at least a month. Some might experience redness or slight swelling after waxing. Keeping an ice pack on the affected area will mellow down the redness in just a couple of minutes.

And if you are keen on getting rid of your underarm hair forever, then consider trying the laser hair removal treatment, which will help you get rid of underarm hair permanently in just a couple of sittings. However, make a sure to do a patch test before you proceed.

This was our multi-step armpit care routine that can help your underarms look beautiful again. If you know of any other ways to do it, let us know in the comments below.
