7 Arranged Marriage Rejection Stories That Might Take You Aback

India is one of the few countries in the world where arranged marriages are very common. For those of you who don’t know what an arranged marriage is, it’s a marriage that is planned and agreed upon by the families of the couple. The boy and the girl aren’t the ones selecting each other, it’s the families that decide for them. Earlier there were people known as marriage brokers who would help a particular family in selecting a groom or bride for their children. But now with matrimonial websites coming into existence, the entire concept of arranged marriages has gone to another level. The arranged marriage scenes have become something like a recruitment process now.

The boy or girl needs to go through a rigorous number of questions to find their perfect match. What do you do? What’s your annual income? How much property do you own? Do you like the idea of a joint family or a nuclear family? All these are just some of the zillion questions that one faces. And in the case of arranged marriages, there can be a lot of rejections, like a lot of “no”s before a final “yes”. Ask any person who’s in an arranged marriage if they ever got rejected for the most bizarre reasons, and they’ll have quite a few hilariously incredible tales to tell. Let’s have a look at seven such arranged marriage rejection stories that quite literally took us into a shock.

1. “His Father Wasn’t Aware That He Had A Girlfriend”

I wasn’t ready when my parents said it was time for me to get married. In spite of constant resistance to the idea, my parents found a match for me through a mediator. Our families met, they liked us, and he seemed to be a decent man, so even I agreed to the alliance. We even exchanged phone numbers. After a few weeks when we were supposed to discuss further talks for the marriage, the boy’s side didn’t turn up at the decided meeting venue. The boy’s father called up my dad and said that he didn’t know that his son had a girlfriend. His son wanted to marry his girlfriend and apologized. My father got furious, nevertheless, he continued with his search for a groom for me.

2. “When I Requested Him To Be Punctual For Our Dates”

So, I met this guy through a matrimonial site. Our families liked each other and we began to date too. What used to turn me off the most was that he never was on time to any of our dates. He was always at least 50 minutes late. So, one of the meetings when he was late, again, I politely requested him to come on time so that I can utilize my time in a better way. He argued. And when I reached home, my parents told me that the boy rejected me as I babysat him over manners.

3. “Because I Have Two Younger Sisters”

A girl whom I liked on a matrimonial site rejected me because I had two younger sisters. She was worried that she’ll have to share our finances with my sisters. Interestingly, she was unemployed and my two younger sisters work MNCs and have had successful careers.

4. “Because I Had Some Further Study Plans”

I got rejected because I wanted to do MBA after my wedding. In spite of me assuring the groom’s family that I’ll take care of the MBA expenses, they weren’t happy about it. They were worried that all my savings would go for my study and I wouldn’t be contributing to their family anymore.

5. “He Didn’t Have Any Ex And I Had One”

I confessed to a prospective groom about my past. I told him that I dated a guy for two years and it never worked out, therefore, I parted ways with him. This groom-to-be candidate of mine felt like he was cheated as he never had any girlfriend. He said that marrying me would be like getting cheated. He wanted a girl with no past whatsoever. He stopped talking to my family and me from that day.

6. “I Didn’t Give In To Her Worldly Desires”

So, I loved this girl when I saw her for the first time. I was introduced to her by my uncle. It was an arranged set up. With a wish to know her better before the wedding, I took her on a candlelight dinner date. I asked her generally how does she expect her husband to be. Her answer was he needs to pamper with lots of gifts, latest makeup range, smartphones, Swarovski crystals, etc. When I told her that occasional pampering is fine with me but not every other day, it miffed her. She went home saying I wasn’t a nice guy.

7. “I Asked For A House Help”

The guy’s side rejected me because I told them that I don’t enjoy cooking and I’d love to have a cook or a house help instead to help me out. I told them that I’m a working woman and to be able to come back home and do all the household chores, it just wasn’t possible. They didn’t find the explanation fit I guess.

These arranged marriage rejection stories can sound shocking and to some, it could be funny. But let’s not forget that rejection of a big thing like marriage proposal can also hit the confidence of an individual.
