As 90s kids, we grew up watching Bollywood movies that we will always consider evergreen. Be it Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, DDLJ, Baazigar or Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham, they will always remain close to our hearts and we can watch them again and again and not be bored. These movies shaped our thought process, fashion sense, sense of humor and almost our way of life. The most famous movies of the 90s were Karan Johar’s movies which taught us the know-how of family life, fashion, love and how can we forget— love triangles! These movies made us aware of trends that were cool and as little girls we could not wait to grow up and give them a try. Here are some of the beauty lessons that KJ’s movies taught us.

1. The Nerd Look

In the famous and heart-wrenching movie Kal Ho Naa Ho, Preity Zinta who portrayed Naina rocked the girl-next-door nerd look with her glasses. She was called chashmish by Shah Rukh Khan in the movie and the song Pretty Woman brings out her prettiness. This movie started the trend of the “Nerd look” that is trending even till date. Naina kept her hairstyle simple. She blow-dried her hair and maintained a straight cut without trying anything fancy and that suited her personality well. In Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, Deepika Padukone portrays herself as a nerd but what most people do not realize is that it was Preity Zinta who made this famous look what it is today.

2. All Things Shimmery

Anyone who is a fan of Karan Johar movies knows the unique character of Poo. Poo a.k.a Pooja was played by Kareena Kapoor in Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham. The movie shows us the importance of family values and respect between parents and children. The movie is an emotional rollercoaster that encompasses laughter, sadness, anger, and pain. In the movie where Poo’s wardrobe is introduced to us, we cannot help but be jealous because of the lavish mix of clothes, accessories, and footwear she owns. She wears shimmery outfits that are specifically shown on two occasions during the movie— the opening scene where Poo is introduced and during her prom where she wears a red sequin top and leathery flared pants. These 90s trends are still a fashion statement 30 years later.

3. Metallic Lips

As a 90s kid we all wanted shiny lipsticks or as we used to call it “gloss”. We’ve seen Tina wearing it in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and we all wanted to own one. Tina, played by Rani Mukherjee, is a student who joined college midyear and wore clothes that were only appropriate for clubbing – why? Because she was the principal’s daughter who came back from London and did not have any other clothes to wear. Even with this flawed argument, we wanted to be Tina because of all the attention she got from the boys (Am I right, ladies?). Sadly, all the TV actresses back in the late 90s caught on with this trend and kinda ruined it for us. Remember Komolika’s lips?

4. Long Eye Lashes

Long eyelashes have been an “in” thing long before we even knew about it. In today’s day and age, many people opt for fake eyelashes to make theirs look extremely long. But we see Anjali in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, played by Kajol, transforming from a “tomboy” to a traditional Indian woman and flaunting her long eyelashes and silky hair. From wearing sporty clothes to traditional Indian sarees, Anjali becomes a “woman” during the second half of the movie and makes her way back to her first love, Rahul (we know it’s pathetic). Her wardrobe shows us a collection of simple yet beautiful sarees that she carries off with utmost grace and poise. In the movie, you can see Anjali playing basketball in her saree and as little girls that excited us more than her hair or makeup because we recognized a badass in a sanskari Anjali.

5. The Perfect Indian Bride

Indian brides are the prettiest because of how they wear their outfits, jewelry, and makeup. The Big Fat Indian wedding as it is called shows us how extravagant Indian weddings are and our brides to look fabulously gorgeous. In Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Anjali’s couture made all of us wish that we had the opportunity to get married. She wears a beautiful traditional suit with heavy jewelry and looks stunning. Her attire is still an inspiration to so many Indian brides who like to wear similar outfits for their weddings.
The 90s were one of the best times for Bollywood because of how some movies were ahead of its time. It made an impact on our lives that we will not forget and hold close to our hearts for a long time. Which was your favorite Bollywood movie from the 90s? Comment below and let us know.
