Let’s face it, when it comes to the beauty community, there are a lot of tips and opinions that are totally unnecessary. Whether people say things like “Girls look better with no makeup on” or people who use the do-it-yourself approach for everything, you should take things with a grain of salt. Everyone has their own definitions of beauty, and telling someone that their version of it is not okay, is completely wrong. There are also a lot of beauty tips that might come across as unhelpful rather than of great help to others. Here are nine unwanted and unnecessary beauty tips that you should stop paying attention to:

1. Putting Lemons On Your Face

Even if you’re someone who prefers going for a DIY approach to your skincare, it’s never a good idea to rub lemon on your face. Lemons are highly acidic and can dry your face or, worse, get into tiny cuts or aggravate your acne further. Instead, you can add lemon juice with honey or dilute it with some other product rather than applying in on your face directly (1).

2. Skipping Lipstick To Be Less “Loud”

Lipstick is fun, and we need to move forward from the Victorian era rubbish about it being “loud” or an indicator of “availability” in people. Instead, you should wear whatever shade of lipstick you like without caring about the opinions of others. If you like red lipstick and love wearing it out on dates, go ahead! People who call wearing makeup as “false advertisements” clearly perceive people who wear makeup as a product because only products are meant to be “advertised”.

3. Not Moisturizing Oily Skin

Oily skin can be a blessing to some as we don’t need to moisturize as often as those with dry skin, and our skin flourishes during the winter months. However, that doesn’t mean you completely refrain from using moisturizer. Instead, it would be best to use a water-based moisturizer as that is more light and gives you nourishment without clogging your pores.

4. Excessively Brushing Your Hair

It’s not a good idea to excessively brush your hair, especially if you’re someone who has frizzy, breakable, damaged, or curly hair. People who say things like “Brush your hair 100 times a day” clearly have straight hair because people with curly or afro hair cannot relate. Brushing your hair once a day for a few times is a great way to spread the natural oils present in your hair across the length of your hair. But at the same time, over-brushing can damage your hair a lot.

5. Using DIY Methods To Plump Your Lips

You’ve probably heard of tonnes of methods to plump up your lips and make them look super inviting. However, it’s best to stick to buying a tried and tested plumping lip gloss/balm as those aren’t damaging. Rubbing cinnamon on your lips to make them plump will just end up burning more than fixing anything.

6. Exfoliating Every Time You Wash Your Face

Exfoliating once or twice a week is a great option but doing so each time you wash your face is a silly idea as it will just cause damage to sensitive skin and cause your skin to get super dry. Instead, just stick to using a regular cleansing face wash.

7. Piling On Heavy Makeup

Piling on heavy makeup is fine as long as it is for short periods of time. But caking your face in makeup and wearing super heavy makeup on a daily basis won’t give your skin the chance to breathe. If you’re only wearing makeup to match up to unrealistic beauty standards, you should take a step back and see how it could be causing your skin harm.

8. Excessively Using Tanning Beds

Tanning excessively, whether it is by the beach, on your roof, or at a tanning salon, is a bad idea. Prolonged exposure to tanning beds can change your skin cells’ structure and has even been linked to certain cancers like melanoma and other common skin cancers. It’s a better idea to tan naturally and on a limited basis (2).

9. Popping Your Pimples

There will be tonnes of people who recommend you to pop your pimples and get over it, but that’s not always a good thing as you will be left with acne scars that will take ages to go away. Instead, you should make use of topical creams or if your acne is a recurring issue, meet up with a dermatologist or dietician who can give you better advice on how to manage your acne without having to poke and prod at it.

When it comes to beauty, the only opinion that matters is your own. If you’re interested in looking up DIY beauty treatments, you should definitely have a second opinion about it before you try and indulge. Do let us know if you learned something new from this article in the comment section below.
