From Deepika, Aditi, and Ranveer to Virat, Anushka and Masaba, every celebrity seems to be rocking an outfit that the famous Sabyasachi Mukherjee has designed. The Bengali NIFT graduate has genuinely changed the world of fashion with his unique designs, exquisite patterns, and progressive ad campaigns. Winning numerous awards even before he made it big, Sabyasachi has been in the fashion game for more than two decades. From ramp walks in Kuala Lumpur to fashion shows in Miami, Sabyasachi’s designs have touched both foreign shores and the bodies of models and actresses in our own home country. So what is it about the designs that set him apart? Well, it might have to do with the trends that he establishes with his vast array of diverse models. Here are seven of them:

1. Sabyasachi Features Beautiful Brown-Skinned Models

Sabyasachi is one of the Indian fashion designers who does not discriminate amongst light-skinned and dark-skinned models. From featuring fashion designer Masaba Gupta, who is of Afro-Caribbean and Indian heritage, to many other tanned beauties, Sabyasachi isn’t afraid of diverting from the eurocentric norm that we are all used to. After all, we are Indians, and our skin tones are as diverse as the numerous languages that are spread out across our beautiful country.

2. He Brought Back The Classic Indian Nude Lip And Kohl Rimmed Eyes

Indian women have always been known for their exotic features and big brown eyes. While most of us have moved on from the days of kohl and prefer lining our eyes with eye-popping liner and eyeshadow, Sabyasachi has featured models with deep kohl-rimmed eyes that make us want to grab our kohl pencils again. Even when it comes to nude lips, we see Western women and celebrities rocking the trend, but many of us prefer a more “unnatural” shade of lipstick that is nowhere close to our own. We’re not trying to say that this shade of lipstick is bad, but sometimes, nude lips do make a bolder statement than any of our bold lipsticks.

3. His Models Adorn Their Hair In “Gajras” And Roses

If you follow Sabyasachi’s page on Instagram, then you probably have seen his models wearing exquisite mogra flowers and red roses along with their outfits. While most younger women choose to skip this tradition of putting flowers in their hair, many older women proudly sport these flowers. However, divas like Anushka Sharma and Deepika Padukone popularised this trend by wearing flowers in their hair at their own weddings. Now, this once shunned “old-fashioned” aesthetic is regaining its popularity.

4. He Turned Middle-Parted, Oiled Back Hair Into A Wedding Staple

In many parts of rural India, women oil and middle-part their hair before tying it into plaits or a tight bun. Sabyasachi observed this trend and decided to make it a fashion trend among his models. While this was traditionally associated with women from villages or older women, it is now being spotted on younger women and a more urban crowd. Many women even style their hair in low-buns or low ponytails to give it a certain kick. Sabyasachi has turned this into a fashion staple amongst younger generations.

5. Male Models Who Are As Elaborately Dressed As Their Female Counterparts

When it comes to Bridal wear, most of the focus is usually on the bride, and the groom can often get away with a more basic sense of dressing. However, Sabyasachi has often flipped the script in this regard. He has featured extremely elaborately dressed male models without making them look “feminine” in any way. His male models are often captured in candid shots, laughing away or having conversations with one another.

6. Plus-Sized Models Rule His Bridal Wear Campaigns

While more and more brands are working towards inclusivity, we have to hand it to Sabyasachi for featuring plus-sized models in some of his most extensive ad campaigns. It’s no secret that India has a huge culture of body shaming, and those who are plus-sized are often mocked and trolled over their weight. However, he didn’t let that influence or impact his decision to feature beautiful plus-sized models donning some of his most impressive work.

7. He Features Models Who Are Genderfluid And Identify As LGBTQ+

While Section 377 was recently deemed unconstitutional regarding LGBTQ+ relationships, the truth is that LGBTQ+ folk in India still do not receive the representation that they deserve. Many fashion designers are afraid of featuring LGBTQ+ or gender-fluid models due to the insensitivity surrounding their preferences. Yes, as harsh as it is to admit, India is still pretty homophobic, and those who identify as LGBTQ+ still face societal discrimination. Sabyasachi changed that by featuring models who are open members of the LGBTQ+ community and doing many campaigns that featured androgynous models and models in genderfluid clothing.

It’s wonderful to see how inclusive Sabyasachi is as a designer, but we have to admit that it would be great for him to give credit where credit is due. If he dolls his models in looks traditionally featured in villages, isn’t it only fair that he credits his sources? Let us know all of your thoughts on this article in the comment section below!
