7 Ways To Successfully Trim Your Hair Or Your Partner’s Hair At Home

Written by Niharika Nayak, BA (Media & Communication)  •

The lockdown has caused many of us to turn into amateur hairstylists at the drop of a hat. As parlors and salons are shut during these times, we have resorted to taking matters into our scissors — I mean hands. Whether it is cutting our hair or the hair of our partner’s, many of us have had to resort to doing it ourselves during this period and thus need a few tips every now and then. However, now is not a time to experiment wildly with your scissors as many of us need to take video call meetings for work. However, if you and your partner require a basic trim, we’ve got you covered.

  • Get Your Hands On The Right Tools

No good makeshift salon is complete without the right pair of scissors, right? So go out and grab the right one (while maintaining lockdown guidelines of course)! Whatever you do, make sure you do not go for the office scissors as those are meant for cutting paper and not your delicate hair strands. They are unnecessarily bulky and quite a hindrance to use in this way as well.

  • Get Prepped In Advance

If you are the kind of person who travels a lot then you’re probably aware of those tiny travel bag toiletry bottles you can purchase. These kits contain one spray bottle that can be filled with any liquid you desire. Since those are easily available, you can turn them into a makeshift salon’s spray very easily. If you can’t land one of those, you can go to the local hypermarket and ask someone there. They usually have a haircare section. Always use a spritz to wet your hair instead of wet hands as that could lead to tangling issues.

  • Start With The Sides And The Tips

The best way to cut your hair is to start with the sides rather than the top or the front. You must first get rid of any split ends your hair might have before you slowly move upwards, or downwards. It all depends on how short your hair is. Start by cutting the sides and slowly blend your way so that the top part of your hair matches the bottom part.

  • Don’t Let Go(gh) Of Your Ears

Be very very careful around the ears. As silly a warning as this seems to be, there have been numerous mishaps related to cutting ears in the past. Rather than landing up in a lot of unnecessary pain or on a trip to the hospital, be very careful with the sharp pair of cutting scissors. Remember, hair can grow back, ears cannot!

  • Less Is More

Remember how you’d tell your stylist to cut a few inches off and the next thing you knew, you were sporting a crew cut right as college began? Well, if you remember this then you probably remember all the teasing and name-calling. When it comes to cutting off your hair you must remember to not follow in your stylist’s footsteps and just cut a little bit off. Remember, damp hair always looks longer than when it is finally dried.

  • Go For A Trim, Not A Style

As said earlier, now is not the greatest time to experiment with funky hairstyles. If you’re someone who enjoys having funky hairstyles, save it for when the lockdown ends. After all, nobody except your office buddies and housemates can see your hair. It’s best to stick to just trimming your hair and cleaning up your look a little bit.

  • DO NOT CUT YOUR OWN BANGS

This cannot be stressed enough. Bangs are a mistake! Especially if you’re doing them yourselves. Besides being a little outdated, they are extremely difficult to maintain and truly look horrible when not done right. You may be a pro at all sorts of other things, but cutting your own bangs may be  a major mistake. If you still do want to take the risk, you should probably watch a few youtube videos to see how many people regret getting bangs.

Sure cutting hair during the lockdown might seem like a daunting task at first, once you get the hang of it you’ll have the best time chopping hair off. Remember how you cut the hair off barbies or other dolls as a kid? Think about doing it on yourself or an actual living person. Sounds worse, right?. End of the day, all you need to ensure is that you stay clean and hygienic and don’t leave the chopped hair lying around. It’s a good idea to cut hair by the window or in a balcony as it will be an easier cleanup process. Let us know if our tips helped you out during this time!
