In many countries across the world, the sad reality is that women are forced to choose between having a successful career and parenting. One might even be misled to believe that celebrities do not have to go through this process, but this is not true. Even in the seemingly progressive film industry of ours, actresses are often required to take easier and more motherly roles compared to when they hadn’t started a family. Like many women in her field of work, Bhagyashree too chose to settle down and raise her children over pursuing a growing career in film. Here’s her story
Overnight Stardom
Bhagyashree was one of the few leading ladies in Bollywood who actually managed to gain overnight success right after the premiere of her first film. The actress starred in the film Maine Pyaar Kiya opposite Salman Khan and won the hearts of audience members across the country. Her portrayal of the shy, beautiful Suman won acclaim from critics and the film ended up being a huge hit at the box office.
However, before Bhagyashree could fully get her foot through the Bollywood door, she tied the knot and decided to go on hiatus. Many of the actress’s fans were dismayed to hear the news and were waiting to see her grace their screens once again. And now, their prayers are finally being answered. The actress is set to make a comeback with the Telugu adaptation of the popular Chetan Bhagat novel, Two States.
Following In Her Footsteps
Although Bhagyashree might not have had the chance to fully live out her dreams of stardom during her younger days, her older son, Abhimanyu Dasani made his debut recently. The young star made his mother proud by winning himself a Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut. Like his mother before him, Abhimanyu too achieved success through his first film and won critical praise for his role. The actor starred in a film called, Mard Ko Dard Nahi Hota.
The mother-son duo recently appeared in an interview with a leading online daily and Bhagyashree was quizzed about whether she regrets quitting at the start of her career to raise her children and the actress said, “Yes, and no. A tough call because by then I had realized that I do enjoy acting and I was like I wish I had the possibility of managing both. But no, because he just took over my life. My entire focus and happiness were having him with me. At that point, it was not a tough choice. All that I wanted to do was spend time with him.”
No Major Regrets
Bhagyashree stated that she doesn’t regret her decision as she believes her children were her first priority. However, she added that they were the ones who convinced her to make a comeback as they knew how much she truly enjoyed acting and being on screen. Abhimanyu had also stated that although his mum was a known face, he had a relatively normal childhood. The young and upcoming star told the interviewer that his parents insisted he is a good human being first. He mentioned how he would only get recognized if he was spotted with his mother and only then people would start asking questions. Abhimanyu stated, “There was more pressure on me to be a good human being. Also, I don’t have any friends from the film circle, and haven’t been to any filmi parties.”
Bhagyashree also opened up about her love story with her husband, businessman Himalaya Dasani. The pair had known each other for many many years before tying the knot and Bhagyashree even revealed that they were classmates. She spoke about how they were polar opposites and how she was always the class monitor while he was the naughty one. She added that she felt like they were both Yin and Yang and stated that he kept his feelings hidden until the last day of school.
No Love For Salman Khan
In a hilarious interview, the actress once revealed that she had asked Salman Khan to keep his distance from her during the shooting of the film, Maine Pyaar Kiya. The actress stated that Salman teased her about her relationship and often hum romantic songs into her ears during shoots. Bhagyashree stated that she eventually introduced Salman to her husband and added that they stayed cordial throughout. She stated that her husband wasn’t very comfortable with her performing intimate scenes with other male actors.
While it is often unfair that many women are forced to give up on their career for family, it is important to remember that every woman must have a choice.
