Be it an acting legend, a superstar sitarist or even a regular Joe; in Indian culture, it is hard for most of society to open up to the thought of having children before marriage. Here is a list of people who chose to defy the norms and do what they felt was right. In cases where faith dealt them a bad hand, these stars triumphed and reached incredible heights due to their determination and sheer will power. While most of these stars came clean early on, some concealed their “illegitimate” children from the world. Here is a list of superstars who had children out of wedlock:
1. Neena Gupta And Vivian Richards: Masaba Gupta
When the name Neena Gupta comes to mind, most people brought up in the 80s think of their television and movie screens. Known for her feisty attitude and bubbly personality, Neena Gupta was at the peak of her career when she fell in love with West Indies cricketer, Vivian Richards. Neena Gupta’s relationship with the cricketer turned into an open secret when the actress got pregnant and mothered their child in 1989. Their daughter Masaba Gupta went on to become one of India’s most well-known fashion designers and is known for her unique mixture of both cultures in her designs. Although Neena and Vivian called it quits a few years later, they’ve remained friends and are on good terms.

Purab Kohli has been the fantasy of many young ladies. Who wouldn’t become hopelessly enamored with the chocolate boy of Rock On!! anyway? The actor never kept his relationship under wraps, despite having his daughter, Inaya out of wedlock. The actor had been married previously and probably wanted to take his time with his next relationship. Purab and Lucy eventually tied the knot in 2018 and now co-parent their daughter.

Gemini Ganesan and Pusphpavalli were both married to other people when they met on the sets of Miss Malini and fell in love. It is believed that they ran away together and eloped in secret before they were blessed with a daughter, Bhanurekha. Bhanurekha went on to drop the first part of her name and star in many films. The young actress made a name for herself despite the emotional turmoil of her personal life and went on to form a solid bond with her half-siblings, Gemini Ganesan’s other daughters.
4. Aamir Khan And Jessica Hines: Jaan
When it comes to keeping an affair under wraps and hiding an illegitimate child, who better than Mr Ghajini himself? Aamir Khan, otherwise known as Bollywood’s biggest perfectionist made all jaws drop when the reports of his secret love-child, Jaan broke out. The actor allegedly had a brief affair and even lived in with British columnist, Jessica Hines. According to sources, he was shooting for his motion picture Ghulam when the occurrence happened. At first, the mother of the child stayed away from the limelight but later revealed the name of the father. Apparently, Aamir had another fallout with his father due to him ‘not taking responsibility’.
5. Pandit Ravi Shankar And Sue Jones: Norah Jones
When the world found out about Ravi Shankar’s affair with Sue Jones, fans were left in shock. The two were in a relationship for some time, and Shankar even resided in Sue Jones’ New York home. The pair were eventually blessed with a young daughter, Geethali Shankar (known professionally as Norah Jones) Due to the emotional conflict between her parents and Ravi’s decision to marry her half-sister’s mother rather than her mother, Norah spent most of her childhood away from her father and his family. Today she is on great terms with her younger half-sister Anoushka Shankar, and they have even performed and produced music together.
6. Smita Patil And Raj Babbar: Prateik Babbar
Actor turned government official Raj Babbar was married to Nadira Babbar when he met Smita Patil. They even shared two children. But that did not stop Raj from leaving his wife and getting involved with Smita. They also had a child together, Prateik Babbar. Sadly, tragedy struck, and Smita met her demise at the young age of 31. The actress had a complicated delivery and died from the complications of it. Raj went on to go back to his ex-wife and children and left their infant son Prateik with his maternal grandparents. All’s well that ends well in this story as the father-son duo reconciled and are on better terms.

Popular South Indian superstars Sarika and Kamal Haasan had a short affair during the 1980s which prompted the birth of their daughter, Shruti Haasan. Kamal was previously married to classically trained dancer, Vani Ganapathy. Despite his infidelity, Sarika went ahead with the pregnancy and gave birth to a healthy baby girl. The couple tied the knot once Kamal had officially split from his ex-wife. The couple shared another little girl named Akshara before calling it quits for good.
While these celebrities didn’t pursue the conventional way of life and decided to do things their way, it’s unfair to judge them. While we believe that infidelity isn’t right, a couple having child out of wedlock is completely their decision since marriage isn’t a necessity, but a choice.
