“Age is just a number”— you would probably think someone in the film industry came up with that saying. Considering the massive age gaps between Bollywood couples themselves, it’s no wonder that the industry has faced flak for the significant age difference between lead heroes and their love interests. While it’s easy to hate on people for getting married to those younger or older than them, it’s a little unfair to do so. All you need is love, right? Here is a list of Bollywood celebrities who defied cultural norms and chose to get married despite the negativity:
1. Shahid Kapoor And Mira Rajput
Of course, we have to begin this list with the marriage that sent a lot of tongues wagging. Many of Shahid’s fans were upset when he announced his nuptials to Delhi based college student, Mira Rajput. People were stunned at the idea of a 34-year-old Shahid Kapoor tying the knot with a 21-year-old Mira Rajput. Considering that there is a whopping 13 year age gap between the pair, we aren’t surprised by the mixed reviews fans were providing. According to Shahid himself, their families were a part of the same religious group, also known as “Radha Soami Satsang Beas”. The pair got hitched in a private wedding ceremony with only a few family members in attendance. After which, they threw a massive bash for their close friends and loved ones. The couple is now proud parents to their children Misha and Zain Kapoor.
2. Sanjay Dutt And Manyata
When Bollywood’s poster boy for rebellious activities decided to tie the knot with his wife, Manyata, it wasn’t just his fans who didn’t support the wedding. Both of his sisters apparently objected to their brother’s pending nuptials and didn’t like Manyata. The couple has a staggering age difference of 19 years. To put that into perspective, Sanjay Dutt’s oldest daughter is 31 and closer in age to her stepmom than her father is. All’s well that ends well for this couple, and they’re living happily with their two children Shahraan and Iqra.
3. Rajesh Khanna And Dimple Kapadia
Dimple was all but 16 when she tied the knot with Bollywood’s reigning champ (at the time), Rajesh Khanna. The actress was so young that even her debut film hadn’t been released yet and after marriage, she promptly quit the Hindi film industry. She was all set to live a peaceful life as a trophy wife when things between the couple turned sour. In 1982, the pair decided to separate, and Dimple was back to acting in Hindi films. Oddly enough, the pair never actually got divorced despite so many rumors of infidelity on both their parts. Even after they were separated, Rajesh claimed to still be in love with Dimple. Towards the end of his life, the actress stayed by his side from the moment he fell ill to the moment he took his last breath.
4. Saif Ali Khan And Kareena Kapoor
This isn’t the first ‘age-gap rodeo’ Saif has dabbled in. His first ex-wife Amrita Singh was a good 12 years older to him, and the actor was only 21 when they tied the knot. The pair even share two children, Sara and Ibrahim Khan. Unfortunately for the couple, the marriage ended in 2004 and Saif was rumored to be dating every co-star of his until he finally decided to date his Tashan co-star, Kareena Kapoor. Kareena is 11 years younger than him. The couple tied the knot in 2012 and are now proud parents to their son, Taimur.
5. Kabir Bedi And Parveen Dusanj
Bollywood’s very own Don Juan, Kabir Bedi, tied the knot for the fourth time with girlfriend, Parveen in 2005. The couple shares a massive age gap of 29 years! In fact, Parveen is four years younger than Kabir’s daughter, Pooja. Before shifting to India, Parveen was working as a social change consultant for the United Kingdom government.
6. Dharmendra And Hema Malini
This duo has an interesting back story. Dharmendra was already married to another woman when the couple got involved with each other. Despite the opposition of their family, the pair converted to Islam (so they could legally marry). The couple has a 13-year age gap, but even that didn’t stop them from choosing to shack up. They share two daughters, Eesha and Ahaana Deol.
7. Dilip Kumar And Saira Banu
Many people were left stunned when Bollywood legend, 45-year-old Dilip Kumar decided to tie the knot with a 22-year-old Saira Banu in 1966. Many were taken aback by the massive age gap between the pair, but their love conquered all the naysayers’ beliefs. Despite facing a tumultuous time during the 1980s and infidelity on Dilip Kumar’s part, the couple decided to stick it out and have been married for over 53 years now.
