You’ve probably heard the term “Love is blind” more often than you can count. And in the case of these Bollywood films, love truly is blind! While we do understand that opposites attract, there are certain characteristics that would be deemed as unacceptable by any woman, especially a smart lead character in a Bollywood blockbuster. Sometimes, even the most iconic movies have really miserable pairings that would make no sense in the real world. So let’s take a look at Bollywood films that did their female characters dirty by making them fall for men who didn’t appreciate their true identities or tried to change them.

1. Kuch Kuch Hota Hai

Let’s face the facts. Rahul was a total jerk to Anjali despite being her best friend and went out of his way to express his distaste for her and mock her sense of style while they were in college. Although this film is considered an iconic film, Rahul has always come across as a toxic wannabe alpha male and it’s really sad that Anjali breaks off a promising engagement just to be with him. Sure, we’ve all been there at some point but did you ever wonder what life would be like for the two of them after marriage?

2. Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi

Surprise, surprise! Another Shah Rukh Khan starrer to make it to this list. This film defies all logic. Either Anushka Sharma’s character is blind or she’s just really naive. Just like when Clark Kent puts on his glasses and Lois Lane forgets he’s Superman, we see Anushka’s character fall for her husband’s trickery and mistake him for a different person altogether. Our only question is, what were the scriptwriters thinking?

3. Ae Dil Hai Mushkil

Yes, unrequited love is really sad and painful for the person who is in love, but why can’t Ayan get that Alizeh is not interested in him? He expects her to be head over heels in love with him just because he is in love with her. Besides this, he also enters a rebound relationship with the charismatic and beautiful Saba but does not give her the love and attention she deserves. Like dude, get it together and stop trying to mess with the hearts of these strong, independent women.

4. Namaste England

Why are we still encouraging the stalker hero stereotype? Considering how many people fall prey to the hands of their stalkers in real life, we should really be shifting away from this. Constantly following a woman around like a sad puppy until she eventually gives in is a ridiculous stereotype and must be avoided at all costs. Why can’t we have more films where the male and female lead fall in love organically? Why does one partner have to convince the other to fall for them through toxic behaviour?

5. Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge

To say Raj is a creep would be an understatement. From pulling out Simran’s underwear and dangling it in front of her to saying extremely offensive things to her, it’s a surprise she actually puts up with him. You’d have to be another level of blind to put up with a character as annoying as his. Sure, this movie too was considered iconic AF and won the hearts of many people, it would be silly for us to ever believe these two characters were meant for each other and would have a happily ever after. Simran is shown as being sanskari and independent and Raj comes across as a privileged NRI spoilt brat.

6. Neal ‘N’ Nikki

What were the directors of this film thinking? Besides being unnecessarily explicit, this jodi had nothing in common and shared almost zero chemistry on screen. What makes matters worse is the messed up relationship between the two leads. At the start of their weird dynamic, Nikki accuses Neal of assaulting her and uses it to blackmail him. How is that a healthy beginning to a relationship? And eventually when Neal realizes he has feelings for Nikki, he dumps her cousin (his bride-to-be) at the altar and runs away? Just why?

7. Student Of The Year

And hey, the men aren’t the only problem in these films. SOTY must really be seen as the “kala tika” on Alia Bhatt’s film resume. She plays a perennially confused young girl who can’t decide who she loves more. Moreso, why do her love interests treat her like property they need to claim. Through the course of the film we barely get to see her character shine through and she’s always on screen just for face value. It’s pretty sad because she ended up being a better and more prolific actress than either of her co-stars.

I think it’s about time, Bollywood started showing a more healthy pairing on screen. Whether it’s an old iconic film like Kuch Kuch Hota Hai or a raunchy failed comedy film like Neal ‘N’ Nikki, we really need to start writing better love stories.
