There is a common misconception that girls cannot be best friends. While this is believed to be true for every girl, it is far from the truth. Every woman who has a group of best friends understands how important it is to have that girl gang. Our girlfriends are our best company when we want to dress up and head out for a fun night, dance and drink till we see the daylight. They are the ones we go to when we fight with our boyfriends and want to bitch about him (or all men, sometimes). They help us through mental breakdowns, rough days, breakups, moody days and just any day. From shopping buddies to travel partners, your girl gang is your set of best friends that will stay with you through thick or thin.

Every woman who is blessed with a girl gang has a few of these characters that complete the gang. There is always a secret keeper, the one who gives the best (unsolicited) advice, the fashionista, the “let’s get drunk for no reason” friend, the irrationally fun (stupid) friend, and the mom of the group. Each one plays an irreplaceable role in the group and completes the gang. Over the years, Bollywood movies have shown us various characters of women who we identify with or wish we had in our girl gang. So let’s dive right into it and go through this list of women who played supporting characters in Bollywood movies and make the best addition to our squad.

Vijayalakshmi – Queen

We all remember the badass woman in Queen, Vijayalakshmi played by Lisa Hayden. A woman whose heart is in the right place and supports her friends through their bad days. She cares for her friends, is protective of them, and empowers her friends to be strong women like herself. What’s more, she does her best to bring out the potential in her friends and believes in them more than they probably do in themselves. Wouldn’t it be great to have someone like this in our clique, if we don’t already?

Pinky – Aisha

We all have that friend who we tend to take for granted sometimes. We know they will be there for us no matter what and we tend to take them for a ride. Deliberately or not, doing this can hurt the friendship and cause a lot of disappointment. After all, no one wants to be taken advantage of. But what’s great about these friends is that they will tell you the truth and set you straight. Just as Pinky does in the movie Aisha, it is essential to have friends who can drop truth bombs to you and call you out on your bullshit. Like people say, a real friend is someone who can be honest with you rather than sugar-coating what they say to you and we all need that friend. Don’t you agree?

Payal – Tanu Weds Manu

A friend who makes you a better person is one who shows you the mirror to the reality of who you are when you cannot see it for yourself. Payal in Tanu Weds Manu, played by Swara Bhaskar, does not shy away from pointing out red flags in her friend’s behavior. Having a friend who does this is requisite because when you get carried away, there should be someone to bring you back to reality and keep you grounded. After all, they know you almost as much as you know yourself and can smell it when you’re straying away. Consider yourself lucky if you have a friend who does this. You might be offended that your friend is not “supporting” you but you will thank them later for helping you dodge a bullet. Have you ever faced a situation where your friend saved you from regret before?

Radha – English Vinglish

Every squad needs a friend like Radha in the movie English Vinglish. Played by Priya Anand, Radha is a supporting niece who helps her aunt see her full potential. She is a friend we all wish to have. A friend who supports us when we are faced with a personal crisis, encourages us to succeed if we are on the verge of giving up and reinforce our choices when we deal with conflict. If you have this friend in your girl gang, you are nothing short of blessed.

Aditi – Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani

My personal favorite character from this list, Aditi, played by the talented Kalki Koechlin, in Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani is the perfect combination of fun, responsibility, and care. A friend who will comfort you in trying times, get drunk with you during parties and is not afraid to stand up for what is wrong, even if that means she has to stand against you. A friend like this is loved the most because she is genuine and real. Do you have an Aditi in your girl squad?

It is difficult to imagine a life without your girl squad, isn’t it? Yet, so many people think that girls cannot be best friends and we can only wonder why. Girls make the best of friends and the most fun to hang out with. Tag your girl squad in the comments below and tell them who they are to you.
