If there’s one thing your skin needs after a long and exhausting week, it’s a relaxing detoxification ritual. Your skin goes through a lot each day. It gladly and proudly wears your favorite makeup (which, FYI, contains a ton of chemicals) and fights against the harsh sun rays as well as the pollutants of the environment. After going through so much, it deserves a little pampering from you, don’t you think?

Okay, yes, giving your skin some TLC at the parlor can get expensive. But that’s not the case when you’re at home! Just a couple of ingredients and your own labor is not going to cost you much but it’s surely going to benefit your skin a lot. The tradeoff is actually more than worth it! And to prove that, we’ve got a super easy detoxifying coconut oil and charcoal mask for you, which you can make at home.

How To Make Your Own Charcoal And Coconut Face Mask

The best thing about this face mask, unlike those readily available ones in the market, is that the ingredients are completely under your control. You know exactly what’s going into the face mask, so you don’t have to worry about preservatives, chemicals or parabens. Which means that don’t have to experience horrid allergic reactions that actually end up damaging your skin rather than benefitting it!

The charcoal and coconut face mask we present to you is completely safe and highly advantageous for your skin. All you have to do is just put in a little bit of effort to make it and apply it. That’s all you need to do and even that is extremely easy!

Without further ado, let’s get started on the mask. The ingredients you’ll need are:

  • 2 tablespoons of activated charcoal powder
  • 1/3rd cup of molten coconut oil
  • ½ teaspoon of baking soda

Once you’re ready with all the ingredients, take a small glass jar with a lid and add all the ingredients in it. Mix the ingredients well, ensuring they form a thick, consistent paste. The mask is now ready to use.
Note: You don’t have to specifically buy a jar for this mask. You can use an old jar or one of your discarded cosmetic items. You can also use plastic but glass is preferable as it doesn’t contaminate the ingredients in any way.

Take a face brush and apply this mask on your cleansed face. Make sure you cover your face entirely apart from your eyes, eyebrows, and lips. Allow the mask to sit for 20 minutes. You can close your eyes and relax as the mask works its magic in your skin. Once 20 minutes are up, remove the mask and wash your face with a mild cleanser.

See how easy that was? That’s all you have to do to detoxify your skin at the deepest level.

Why Does This Mask Work?

Activated charcoal is one of the main ingredients in this mask and we all know about the buzz this ingredient has created in skin care! Rightly so though. Activated charcoal is full to the brim with skin benefits (1). Its strong absorption properties help suck out dirt, dust, pollution and toxins from deep within your skin, leaving you with a flawless complexion. Activated charcoal can also help in treating acne. So, you don’t have to worry about using this mask if your skin is acne-prone.

Since activated charcoal works so hard on your skin, its effects can be drying. To balance that out is why coconut oil is a part of this mask. Coconut oil is deeply moisturizing (2)! Its high fatty acids content helps in smoothening your skin and giving it a fresh, dewy glow. Besides, just like charcoal, it also aids in deeply cleansing your skin as well as fighting acne.

If you’re wondering about the baking soda in the mask, that’s there to brighten your complexion. All the ingredients combined help in making this mask one that won’t let you or your skin down!

However, before you make this mask a part of your beauty regime, we’ve got some tips that can help you enhance its effectiveness:

  • Make sure the activated charcoal powder you use has been sourced from wood chips or coconut shells. Generally, these are pure and do not contain any added ingredients.
  • When making the mask, spread an old towel/cloth/sheet on the surface. Stains of charcoal can be quite hard to remove from your countertop or table, so this little trick will help.
  • Baking soda is a strong compound and can be a skin irritant. Therefore, beauty experts advise not to apply this mask more than once each week.

Expensive beauty treatments or products are not always needed to keep your skin healthy. Sometimes a little DIY and faith in the ingredients of Nature are all it takes!
