Whatever your hair type is, you can count on a hydrating conditioner to make your locks smoother and easier to maintain. We’d give anything for hair like the models have in hair product ads. However, even after using conditioner regularly, you might be doing it all wrong. The conditioner acts as a shield for the hair cuticles against external damage. In addition to restoring the hair’s natural texture and smoothness, they also help to reduce frizz. Even if you have been religiously conditioning your hair after washing it, several common mistakes could be damaging your hair. Read on to know them all.

1. Not Finding The One

When it comes to conditioners, there is no such thing as one size fits all. Knowing your natural hair texture and hair problems can help you choose the right product for your hair. Think about your hair’s length, thickness, and the extent to which it’s been damaged. When styling hair, selecting products that don’t add unnecessary bulk is important. Many people have problems with their hair becoming frizzy, and those who want to control this issue should seek a bottle with the words ‘smoothing the hair texture’ or ‘anti-frizz / frizz control’ on it. Choose products that are nutritious and deep conditioning if you have curly hair.

2. Unequal Distribution

If you’re using the right conditioner for your hair type, bravo! But are you using it correctly? Some people find that using their fingers is sufficient to untangle and disseminate the substance. And if that’s what it takes, then that’s fantastic! However, those with particularly thick or curly hair may experience difficulties. The ideal solution is to use a wide-tooth comb to divide your hair into parts, then apply a small amount of the product to each side individually. Spreading the substance out more evenly reduces hair loss.

3. Quickly Washing It Off

Whether we have a morning lecture, a Zoom conference, or any other commitment, we can quickly apply and wash the conditioner away. That is a serious no-no. You have to give the conditioner some time to do its thing. 3 to 5 minutes is a good minimum time to leave it in.

4. Excessive Conditioner Use

On the mission to improve your hair’s texture and shine, do not overdo the amount of conditioner. Your hair’s type and length determine how much of the product you should apply. For example, those with thin to short hair need less, while those with dense or long hair need more squeezes of conditioner. Make sure you do not use more than a coin size and add more only if you feel your entire hair length is not covered.

5. Keeping Your Hair Down

Leaving your conditioned hair down is a huge mistake as it blocks your skin pores and risks skin irritation. It can also cause back pain if you let your wet hair linger on your neck and back for a long time (1). It’s easy to invite skin issues by not properly cleansing the skin. Use a shower cap or a loose claw clip to secure your hair. The product may also get washed from your body in the shower after you condition your hair.

6. Not Using Conditioner First

Conditioning the hair before washing it with shampoo is a great way to reduce frizz and give dry, wavy hair some volume and manageability. Without rinsing, rub in some conditioner and apply it all over your hair. Wait a few minutes, and then wash it together. This will provide a lot of softness and elasticity to your hair without drying it out.

7. Washing Hair Only With Water

This hack is super convenient when you must rush out without even combing your hair. Co-washing your hair with a conditioner offers many advantages. Simply apply your conditioner to wet hair and massage the scalp gently. Leave it on for a few minutes and wash it off. This might be the answer to correctly hydrating your scalp if you have a dry one.

Make Your DIY Leave-In Conditioner

This may sound odd, but it has worked out well for many and is worth a try. If you have run out of your favorite leave-in conditioner, don’t worry about it. You may use your usual conditioner as a leave-in if you like. All you need to do is dilute it with water and lather it on your hands to create an emulsion. Then, apply it to your wet hair and let it dry out. Now you have your own formula for silky smooth hair all day long!

While conditioners are the way to sleek and shiny hair, it is more than just a luxury product. After all the damage your hair goes through, it is essential to supplement it with a hydrating conditioner. Depending on the type and texture, it is crucial to explore the products that work for your hair and stick to them. So, what’s your secret to maintaining flawless hair?
