This might not be your favorite memory to recall, but remember when your first pimple popped on your face? Yes, acne has been a bane that lingered longer than your teenage years, but with the pesky spots came the grandma’s special home remedies! Even today, most people all over the world prefer using all-natural methods for maintaining healthy skin. Rather than spending significant amounts of money trying chemical-based treatments, people are turning to homemade recipes for skin care since they know the endless benefits of these natural substances. Turmeric is one of the essential ingredients in almost every homemade skincare recipe. The golden spice is also used to treat and prevent a wide range of skin problems and to make our skin look radiant. However, like every other good thing, there is a catch to it. Many people have found that misusing turmeric has led to more skin problems than they were already facing. Here in this article, we have listed some common mistakes people make with a turmeric face pack that add to skin problems. Read on to know them all.

1. Adding Unnecessary Ingredients

Although turmeric is a wholesome and beneficial spice on its own, it should be used with caution when combined with other ingredients. Milk and rose water are the most commonly used ingredients to mix with turmeric. However, adding everything available in your kitchen might have the opposite effect on your skin. Make sure you do your research beforehand to know what ingredients mix well to make the perfect homemade face pack for your skin. For example, Curcumin, an ingredient found in turmeric, has anti-inflammatory properties that can soothe your skin and give you relief from rashes (1).

2. Leaving It On Your Skin For A Long Time

Everything that comes into contact with turmeric turns a bright yellow. So, you must be careful with your clothes and tablecloths if you don’t intend to dye everything yellow. The same goes for your skin as well. You must limit the time the turmeric face pack stays on your face. You should wash it off no later than 20 minutes after applying it. Yellow uneven patches on the skin are possible if a turmeric skin pack is left on for too long. So, remember to keep an eye on the clock. Acne and rashes are another side effect of using too much turmeric on the skin.

3. Incomplete Rinsing

The hustle and bustle of everyday routine sometimes causes us to neglect essential steps in our skincare routine, such as a thorough cleansing of the face. When you apply a turmeric mask on your face, cleansing it deeply becomes essential. Use a mirror and rub gently on the forehead, ridges and beside your nose. Make sure there is no trace of turmeric residue that can lead to skin clogs or buildups. Also, apply a mild moisturizer to seal the pores once you are done washing.

4. Using Soap

Once you use turmeric on your skin, there is no need to use soap or cleansers. This means that using soap will only make your skin coarser and harsher. Do not use soap until at least 24 hours after using the face pack.

5. Irregular Application

One common error we make is applying the turmeric face pack unevenly due to being in haste. You won’t get the full benefits of turmeric if you don’t cover your entire face with it. It can even leave a patchy finish, with the region you applied turmeric being slightly yellower than the rest of your face. So apply it to your skin with a thin, uniform coat. You can use a thick brush if you feel your fingers are leaving an uneven finish on the skin. Once it is done, let it stay for 15-20 minutes, then wash it away.

6. Ignoring Skin Allergies

There is a possibility that turmeric might not suit your skin type. Some people are even allergic to turmeric, and applying a face pack with turmeric as the main ingredient might make your skin swell up or cause rashes. The best way to avoid rushing to an ER after your skin care is to do a patch test on your skin and wipe it clean with the first sign of itching or irritation.

Turmeric is one of the most widely used ingredients for skincare. It has many valuable properties like enhancing skin glow, treating psoriasis, scabies, and has antibacterial and antifungal properties. However, it is essential to know how to use it to reap maximum benefits. Too much of a good thing is never good, and coating your face with turmeric all day would do you any good, either. So, what is your favorite skincare recipe with turmeric? Let us know in the comments section. Keep glowing!
