We’ve all heard the nightmare tales of monsters-in-law and many Bollywood movies have often stuck with the negative stereotype. Although, this is far from reality and should be watched in good humor, it would be nice if more movies dispelled this myth. Thankfully, Bollywood has taken note and released some incredible movies that showcase the beautiful and complex relationships between parents-in-law and their children’s partners. Check out this list to see if your favorite movies make the cut!

1. Vicky Donor

Vicky Donor proved to be a movie that plucked on a lot of heartstrings. It showcased the beautiful relationship between Vicky and his independent, working mother, Dolly. While Dolly was initially hesitant to accept Vicky’s partner, Ashima, she mellowed down when she realized how much they love each other. When things start to go awry in Vicky and Ashima’s relationship, it’s the parents-in-law who help them sort out their differences. In fact, Dolly ends up siding with Ashima. Ashima’s father and aunt also accept, support and even help the pair reconcile.

2. Shubh Mangal Saavdhan

This movie showcased that honest communication is very important between couples as well as their parents. In the film, Munit, deals with problems related to erectile dysfunction and his bride-to-be, Sugandha sticks by his side throughout. When his fiance’s parents find out about his condition, they support the couple and even advise Munit to seek professional treatment. The families of both the young lovers support them throughout the course of the film.

3. Bareilly Ki Barfi

Although initially, they do not want their daughter, Bitti, to get married, they choose to support her decisions as the movie goes on. When Bitti is confused between both her love interests, her parents help her sort things out. Although they were a bit overbearing at times, they respected their daughters’ decision and even treated both their potential sons-in-law with love and respect. Talk about modern love stories!

4. Dostana

Dostana is a movie that borders on both hilarious and emotional events. In the movie, Rani Acharya, who plays the mother of Sameer is left shattered when she discovers that her son is gay (which turns out to be fake). However, as the movie progresses, she is seen being fully accepting of her son’s orientation and even blesses him and his (fake) boyfriend, Kunal. She is shown as a conservative yet understanding mother and future mother-in-law.

5. Dum Laga Ke Haisha

When Prem and Sandhya are both forced into an arranged marriage by their parents, they are initially unhappy. Prem always shames Sandhya for her weight issues and she is likewise mean to him. The pair don’t seem to have the same views on life which often causes friction between them. Moreover, Sandhya has a better educational background and this makes things worse. When they start to drift apart from each other, it is Prem’s parents and his auntie who come to Sandhya’s rescue and help the two sort out their differences.

6. Baghban

Baghban is the tale of a loving couple, Raj and Pooja Malhotra falling into unfortunate times. In the movie, the pair share four biological sons and one adopted son, Alok. Despite the pair spending all their savings and giving their biological sons all the love in the world, they are mistreated by them. They are asked to live separately and are treated miserably by their family members. Despite being made to feel like a burden, Pooja is shown to help her daughter-in-law around the house and still be mistreated. Her granddaughter, Payal mistreats her as well, until Pooja rescues her from the unwanted advances of her boyfriend. This movie is a reverse on the traditional evil stepmother stereotype and instead casts the daughter-in-law in a bad light.

While Kavita Malhotra seems to initially be a hardcore Punjabi woman with a smart mouth and sharp wit, she is shown to have a heart of gold by the end of the film. Initially, she is very angry at her son, Krish, for choosing to marry a Tamilian woman, Ananya, over a Punjabi girl of her choice. However, as the film goes on she slowly accepts Ananya for who she is and appreciates her for her wit and humor. Despite all the hurdles, all four parents are happy that the pair decide to get married and learn to accept each other’s cultural backgrounds. A happy ending only Chetan Bhagat could come up with!

It’s movies like these that bring a legitimate change in society. While it’s all fun and games to mock the monster-in-law dynamic, it could have a more negative impact in the long run. Do you agree with our list? Let us know in the comment section below.
