Avoid Doing This When You Are On Your Period, It Might Be Deadly – All Women Must Read This!

by Ishani Karmakar

Women go through a lot. On top of everything, they have to deal with their monthly visitor. Which, mind you, arrives with her baggage of pain and discomfort. Sometimes, women may unknowingly do certain things on their period that may be really dangerous, or, at the very least, harmful/painful. So, please give your body a break, goddess, because your body deserves it. Don’t make these mistakes when your Aunt Flo comes knocking at your door.

#1 Wear A Tampon For Too Long

Did you know that wearing a tampon for too long can cause Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS)? When left in for too long, it encourages the growth of dangerous bacteria, such as Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes (1). It sticks to the vaginal walls, especially when you are not bleeding a lot, and causes tiny abrasions when you pull it out. A 24-year-old model named Lauren Wasser, who was also aspiring to be a WNBA player, almost died due to TSS caused due to tampon use. In fact, doctors had to amputate her leg to save her life. Do your research before opting for any of options available. You may save your life.

#2 Have Unprotected Sex

So you and your guy cannot keep your hands off each other? Even on the days Aunt Flo is visiting? Well, you must never do it unprotected. Wearing a condom is a must as there is an increased chance of contracting infections during this time (2).

#3 Stay Up All Night

You shouldn’t be doing this even if you are not on your period. Sleep. Your body needs the rest. Stay away from all electronic gadgets, especially your phone. Staying up all night will cause a lot of stress to the body as it will not get the time to repair itself. This can wreck your cycle and lead to a lot of complications.

#4 Skip Meals

Is period pain making you gag at the sight of food? Girl, I know how you feel. But skipping meals during this time of the month is not a very good idea. You are losing blood, and if you do not have a proper intake of nutritious food, you will start feeling weak. So, keep that dieting aside and just get through those four days like a good girl.

#5 Light That Cigarette Up

I shouldn’t have to tell you this. Cigarette smoking is awful for your health. But, you must know that excessive smoking during your menses can lead to severely painful periods. The worst part is, it will be so gradual that you will never be able to link the connection between these two. Stop smoking totally, if you can. If not, try to avoid it on the days your body is bleeding to its glory.

#6 Ignore Anomalies In Bleeding

Your periods can tell a lot about your health. The number of days you bleed, the amount, and the color can speak volumes about what state your reproductive system is in. So, don’t be glad if you bleed for a day and you are done! Get yourself checked by a doc. For details, you can take a look at this article.

#7 Drink Excessively

I know you like to party, girl! And there is no reason why you shouldn’t. But, go easy on the alcohol on those days as it is extremely dehydrating. It is very important to stay hydrated while on your period to ensure that you have a stress-free period.

# 8 Get A Bikini Wax Done

This one is a no-brainer. I mean, not only is it gross, but also extremely painful. While you are on your period, the entire area is super sensitive, and the pain receptors are extra heightened. So, it doesn’t matter if you have planned a romantic getaway this weekend, leave your lady bit alone, please.

#9 Get A Breast Exam Done

Your hormones are doing a tribal dance during your periods. Therefore, this is not the best time to do a breast exam. They may be unnecessary swollen or painful, which may freak the hell out of you. A breast exam should be done regularly, but just don’t schedule it on your Bloody Mary days.

These are the habits that may turn out to be dangerous if you are unaware of the consequences. Share this with your friends and family to ensure that all the girls have a happy period!
