Do You Throw Pineapple Peels Away? Here Are 6 Reasons Why You Should Never Do It Again

Pineapples are delicious, especially if you throw them on top of cakes or smush them up in a delicious smoothie. These tropical fruits even taste pretty good on their own and pack in a bunch of health benefits. They can boost your immune system, make your bones stronger and even prevent your eyes from falling prey to diseases brought on by old age. But that’s what the pulp of the fruit can do for you. What about the skin? It’s meant to be thrown away as you enjoy the soft, sweet innards of the fruit right? Wrong!

The peels of a pineapple are where most of its magic lies. Peels, when boiled together with the pulp of the fruit, turns into a tea concoction that is loaded with health benefits! But before you can enjoy these benefits, you’ll have to mix the tea with a liter of water and allow it to cool. Once that’s done, these are the health benefits this tea will offer you.

1. It can help patients with cancer

Not that you should ever get cancer (god forbid, it’s a terrible disease!), but if you happen to know someone who does suffer from this horrible disease, you can definitely recommend them to sip on some pineapple tea. Especially if they are going through chemotherapy. Pineapple tea can help ease the discomfort that patients of cancer face while they are going through chemotherapy. However, the doctor should be consulted before drinking this tea.

2. It can help those with osteoarthritis

The pain of osteoarthritis is just awful! And that inflammation everywhere really makes it ten times worse. This is why most of the treatments of osteoarthritis are targeted towards symptom control, and one effective home remedy for this malady is pineapple tea. Pineapple tea works by bringing about a reduction in the swelling around your joints such as your knees, fingers, elbows, etc. In fact, this tea can also prevent osteoarthritis if you have it on a regular basis.

3. It can help if you suffer from swelling in general

If pineapple tea can bring about a reduction in the inflammation caused by osteoarthritis, it can decrease the swelling resulting from other aches and pains too! So say, for example, you twisted your ankle and it’s swollen, you can have some pineapple tea to get relief. The thing is that pineapple peels are rich in a particular substance called bromelain. This substance is a highly powerful anti-inflammatory agent, and therefore, can really soothe those painful swellings you have in different places.

4. It can prevent cataracts

Cataracts have many causes such as advancing age (the obvious one), smoking, obesity, hypertension, diabetes, eye injuries etc. Now while most of these causes can be prevented, aging and consequent deficiencies of essential minerals and vitamins cannot. So, how do you prevent cataract then? Simple. By slurping on some pineapple tea. Pineapple peel is rich in vitamin C. Vitamin C helps in maintaining healthy eyesight.

5. It may help in treating infertility

Infertility is a hard-hitting reality that can feel like a failure but don’t give up just yet. While you continue with your ongoing treatment, you can also include a cup of pineapple tea into the regime. Both the peel as well as the pulp of pineapple are enriched with tons of vitamins and minerals that can boost fertility. So make sure you have a glass of that if you are trying to get pregnant.

6. It can prevent an asthma attack

If you are an asthma patient, you must include this magical tea in your diet. The sad thing about an asthma attack is that it can strike anytime, anywhere. But your chances of suffering from an attack can be reduced dramatically if you have pineapple tea, especially after exercising. Pineapple contains vitamin A (one of the many such goodies it is laced with). This vitamin A releases beta-carotene, which is the pigment that gives this fruit its lovely yellow-green color. Now beta-carotene is known to cut down the chances of suffering from an asthma attack induced by exercising, so you may want to carry this tea in a bottle whenever you hit the gym.

Convinced of the many wonders of pineapple and its apparently useless peel? If you are, you know what to do with the peels now. Instead of tossing them in the dustbin like you normally would, try making the tea according to the instructions given above. However, do not treat this tea as a cure for all the ailments listed above. Self-medication is never a wise thing to do, and we strongly advise against it. It’ll be smarter to consult your doctor first and then take the necessary actions.
