The winner of Miss Universe for the year 2019 was a huge step for society in terms of inclusivity and acceptance. Zozobini Tunzi was born in South Africa, in a place where women with her skin tone and her type of her were never considered beautiful. She was asked to change her hair, wear a wig to fit a certain standard of beauty; but she refused to conform. She took part in the beauty pageant in her truest and most real form and won Miss South Africa. With the same dedication and zest, she went on to win Miss Universe 2019 and changed the course of beauty standards set by society. Who set this standard? Why is there a standard, at all? Every person, irrespective of their shape, color, size, ethnicity, or religion is beautiful and no one should compare beauty between two individuals to fit a certain standard. True beauty lies in authenticity and individuality and society does not have the right to snatch that away from women.
