5 Exercises To Do Each Day To Keep Your Arteries Healthy

Written by Shivani K  •

We all know we’ll be alive as long as our heart functions properly. Taking care of our heart is a primary concern for all of us. When it comes to gaining those curvy muscles and etched out abs, we know how to get there. But, what about the exercises that keep our heart healthy? If you think that mere cardio workouts would seal the deal, you’re wrong! For a healthy heart, we need to understand the heart and its components first. Out of which, the arteries (responsible for carrying oxygen from our heart to the various tissues of our body) must be the apple of our eye (1).

When it comes to deciding the exercises for your heart, always ask yourself—how much of it is “enough”? Choose workouts that will not only help to maintain your cardiovascular health but also improve it (2). At the end of the day, you must be content that your arteries are healthy and unclogged.

Here is a list of 5 exercises that we think can benefit your heart health the most:

1. Health-Walking

Better known to us as power walking or brisk walking, it is said that walking every day eventually adds extra hours to our lifetime. However, walking at a snail’s pace won’t benefit our heart. But if we walk at a brisk pace (even if it is for just 20-30 minutes), it fosters our overall arterial health (3). You can make your walks more adventurous by doing some jumping jacks in between. Get creative while exercising as well.

2. Go Jogtrotting

If walking looks laid back to you, then intensify things by jogging instead. It can be done anywhere. But make sure you keep your stamina in mind before you commence. If you have a low endurance level, then start by walking for ten minutes and include jogging for five minutes in between. By doing this you can slowly work your way up in terms of your stamina as well as your heart health. Jogging awakens our muscles making them potent enough to make the best use of oxygen that is supplied. So, let go of that sedentary lifestyle and get jogging!

3. Do A Hike Getaway

Hiking comes with a lot of perks, and if you’re an outdoor person, you’ll know why! This one single exercise can boost your overall growth in terms of life. In addition to benefitting your heart, you end up connecting with Mother Nature. Additionally, it also helps to stabilize your body and mind, improves your body’s core strength, your blood pressure and sugar levels come under control, and much more (4).

If you’re a beginner, start off with small, easy-peasy hiking trails and then slowly you can get advanced with your trails. And the brownie points about this exercise? We bet you’ll end up making new friends who will only encourage you towards leading a healthy life!

4. Footloose Yourself And Dance Away

Movement is the improvement in life. And dancing is one of the best gifts that you can give your body. All those shimmies and shakes don’t just run you out of energy, they burn your body fat and provide you with health benefits beyond your imagination (5). Dancing tones your body, increases your body strength, and many also find it an efficient way to destress themselves.

And you don’t have to be a born dancer who perfectly does the tip-toeing! Just play a music track you love and dance like no one is watching. There isn’t any age limit either. We’re sure you’ve come across stories about women who took to dancing as an escapade from their otherwise boring life and have managed to live the happiest and healthiest. So, wear those dancing shoes and set off on a dancing journey of your own.

5. Get Swimming

The above 4 exercises require bone strength. If you are someone who has joint problems, we’re sure you will not even try to do the abovementioned exercises. Don’t worry though, we’ve found a quick solution to this problem—take the plunge instead! Going for a swim is a great form of cardiovascular exercise that doctors swear by. Swimming doesn’t put pressure on your joints. It helps improve your heart health as well as your lungs’ efficiency. Swimming your heart out once a week is sufficient to guard you against the umpteen health problems.

Also, there are different forms or techniques to follow while swimming – no wonder it’s called a workout (6)! In fact, people have also started to resort to swimming yoga to keep themselves healthy. From burning tons of calories to relieving predominant muscular pains, swimming helps all!

It’s important to pick exercises according to your body’s capabilities (7). See where you lack strength and slowly build yourself stronger. Performing all the exercises every single day will only tear you apart and increase your heart rate. So, plan your heart workouts well and live a healthy, hearty life!
