6 Fairy Tale Bollywood Love Marriages That Ended In Ugly Divorce

Written by Saumya Gaur  •

The year that went by, 2018, was the year of the celebration of larger-than-life Bollywood romances, be it Ranveer-Deepika, or Virat-Anushka, or Anand-Sonam. The entire subcontinent was enthralled by these fairy tale romances. From bespoke hashtags to picturesque locations, they had all the fantastical elements in place.

But we shouldn’t forget that Bollywood has had a long-standing tradition of such fairy tale romances, some of which even culminated into firmly-cemented marriages, such as Amitabh Bachchan-Jaya Bachchan, Dilip Kumar-Saira Bano, etc. However, not every romance could make it. Some of these too-good-to-be-true romances collapsed under the continued scrutiny and pressures of public life and took a turn for the worse.

While Bollywood has been the source of inspiration for our relationship goals, it is can also be the perfect hunting ground for cautionary tales, and these fairytale marriages-turned-ugly-divorces prove just that.

1. Malaika Arora-Arbaaz Khan

She was the chaiya-chaiya girl, he was the ultimate catch, and they were brought together by coffee. Malaika and Arbaaz met each other in 1993 when they came together to shoot an advertisement for a coffee brand. Acknowledging their crackling chemistry, the duo soon went on to date each other, but it wasn’t until 5 years later that they tied the knot.

However, it wasn’t meant to be, and after 18 years of being together, they separated in 2016, eventually getting a divorce in 2017. Though there have been very malicious rumors about their divorce, the two remained tight-lipped about it. It was only recently that Malaika acknowledged that they were making each other very unhappy, and it was affecting others around them and that is why they decided to part ways (1).

2. Karisma Kapoor-Sanjay Kapur

Karisma was the reigning queen of Bollywood in 90s, and so it was big news when she got engaged to Abhishek Bachchan. However, the engagement was called off, and within a year of that Karisma married industrialist Sanjay Kapur, in 2003.

While a section of the media called it a rebound marriage, Karisma herself said that she married Sanjay because he was a good friend of hers.

The couple went on to have two kids together, Samaira and Kian, but this couldn’t prevent the breakdown of their marriage which had begun soon after their wedding. Karisma ultimately moved back to Mumbai with the kids, and the couple separated in 2010. Eventually, they got a divorce in 2016, but it wasn’t entirely a cakewalk. The entire journey was riddled with mudslinging and allegations. Needless to say, fate had not reserved a happily-ever-after for Karisma (2).

3. Amrita Singh-Saif Ali Khan

Their union was quite ahead of its time in the sense that it was an unconventional romance where Amrita was the one who was 12 years Saif’s senior. But the heart wants what it wants, right? Amrita and Saif spent almost 13 years together, during which they had Sara and Ibrahim, but sadly it wasn’t meant to last.

While there were rumors that it was Saif’s affair with a certain Italian actress that was behind the breakdown of the marriage, certain sources were also reporting that it was Saif who had grown out of love and was tired of being mistreated by his wife (3). There might have been an ounce of truth in these allegations as Sara herself acknowledged in her debut KWK episode that both her parents made each other miserable and it was great that they got a divorce!

4. Chitrangda Singh – Jyoti Randhawa

A happily married couple in Bollywood seems to be more of an exception rather than the rule and this couple proves this theory right. Both the actress and her golfer husband knew each other since childhood as their fathers were in the same regiment in the army. And it was how they became close to each other.

In fact, the leggy lass was already married when she made her foray into the Tinsel town. It is said the public nature of her work and her outstation work commitments combined with the alleged infidelity on her husband’s part were the reasons for the breakdown of their marriage (4).

5. Rhea Pillai-Sanjay Dutt

The bad boy of Bollywood had always had a bit of hard luck when it came to the matters of the heart until he met his current wife, Manyata Dutt. Rhea Pillai was a model and an Art of Living disciple who happened to bump into Dutt by chance (5). The cupid struck and after a few years of dating they got married in 1998. However, the marriage soon unraveled and they were granted a divorce in 2008. In a report leaked out by a tabloid, it was found that Rhea had moved on in her life much before the divorce and was in a live-in relationship with ace tennis star, Leander Paes while still being married to Dutt. Talk about being unlucky in love, huh?

6. Illeana D’Cruz

Illeana was in a long term relationship with Australian photographer Andrew Kneebone. She had referred to him as her husband in the first of theirs that she had shared on her Instagram. But lately, there have been rumors about the couple taking two different roads. Illeana and Andrew have both unfollowed each other on Instagram and the actress deleted all the pictures of the couple from her own account. Even if they made a really beautiful couple, we hope that they are happier now.

But all’s well that ends well. All these couples might not have had great luck with matrimony, but they did manage to move on and be cordial with each other. This goes on to prove that marriage is not the bed of roses that the movies portray it to be and one has to work at it in order to make it a success.
