Being a fashionable person is no easy feat. Your manner of dressing plays a considerable role in the way people perceive you, and it’s crucial to establish a unique sense of style to separate yourself from the crowd. Of course, in the quest to do this, we often forget essential factors and sometimes might be accidentally indulging in fashion faux pas. Rather than wearing something that comes across as cringy, it’s a good idea to plan your outfits well. Read this list to view fashion mistakes that can totally cramp down on your style:

1. Choosing The Wrong Earrings For Your Face Shape

While this might seem like a relatively minor issue, picking out the wrong type of earrings for your face shape can lead to your face looking extremely disproportionate. If you’re someone with an oval face, you’ve been blessed. Most types of earrings look good on someone with an oval face. If you have a round or narrow looking face, it’s best to stick to wearing long, hanging earrings. If your face shape borders more towards a square or boxy shape, it’s a good idea to wear hooped or elongated earrings. And finally, if you have a heart-shaped face, it’s best to stick to wearing earrings with elongated lines and curves.

2. Over Accessorizing

Yes, over accessorizing is a thing. If you grew up in the mid-2000s, you probably know about the whole wristband, giant hoops, bracelets and chunky necklace trend. While this might have won you brownie points in high school, it’s incredibly outdated and looks very childish. Sure, you have a lot of expensive jewelry that you want to show off, but in the case of accessorizing, less is more works best. You should also take into account the occasion for which you’re accessorizing. While bracelets would look really good with a chilled out Bohemian outfit at a beach party, they would totally be out of place at a business meeting.

3. Wearing Outfits That Feature Horizontal Stripes

This is a cardinal fashion rule. Horizontal stripes make you look wider than you actually are. Unless you’re genetically and physically blessed with a super athletic or lean figure, the look will not suit you. Horizontal stripes can accentuate all the wrong features on your body. A smarter idea would be to stick to wearing vertical stripes (like pinstripes) or polka dots.

4. Not Dressing For Your Body Type

This is a complete fashion sin and must not be ignored. While we should all be spreading body positivity and shouldn’t really be putting down people for the way their bodies are shaped, we should also understand and respect the fact that not everything might flatter our body type. If you’re curvaceous and not very tall, wide pants are something you should avoid wearing as they might make you look heavier than you actually are. If you have a pear-shaped body, it’s a smart idea to add layers to your torso. You can also accentuate your waist by accessorizing with a belt. This will make your body appear more proportionate.

5. Adding Too Much Volume To Your Outfit

Are you a Disney Princess? Do you belong in 18th century France? You’ve probably answered no to both of these questions. Similar to the latter question, frills are out of trend. Adding extra ruffles and frills to your outfit will only end up drawing attention to all the wrong places. Not only will the ruffles and frills make you look larger than you actually are, but it can also make you look like you’re drowning in fabric. Plus, they’re also a huge hassle to clean and quickly gather dust in your closet.

6. Wearing The Wrong Size

While this seems like it should be a given, it’s something many people choose to ignore. Wearing clothes that are too small or too large can not only be unflattering, but it can also look unprofessional and make you look generally unkempt. However impressive the outfit might look on that mannequin, it might not look that great on you. As hard as it is to admit, not every clothing size is equal, and you might often have to size up or size down depending on the brand you choose to purchase. So if you’re someone whose weight is unstable, it’s a smart idea to either wait for your weight to settle or try your clothes before you decide to purchase them.

7. Dressing Out Of Place

It’s essential to make sure you dress to the occasion. You can’t wear a casual slogan t-shirt to a business meeting just as you can’t wear a formal business outfit to the beach. It can be quite embarrassing to dress up inappropriately. To avoid being made a mockery of, it’s best to avoid wearing something too flashy or blingy to official meetings. Adding a smart wristwatch to a formal outfit will only accentuate your look versus wearing a bright red scarf that would be super distracting.
