Bollywood and fashion go hand in hand and there are tonnes of movies that have released and inspired major fashion trends across the country. Looks from movies like Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, Jab We Met, and Ram Leela have inspired us when it comes to dressing up for weddings, parties or even for college. There’s no denying that movies often set the precedent for what fashion is going to bring in the near future. Are you excited to know about the movies and characters who’ve gotten us many of the clothing trends that we followed (or still follow)? Read on to know our favorite looks from Bollywood movies that went on to become huge trends.

1. Cocktail (Kurtis On Jeans)

Diana Penty’s outfits in this movie inspired girls all across India to finally accept that kurtis and jeans are a smart and practical fashion choice. Pair it with kohl-rimmed eyes, bangles, a pretty pair of earrings and you’re good to go. Take a page out of Diana’s diary and flaunt your Indo-western look with pride. Style your hair into a long plait and carry a pretty satchel to make the look even more interesting.

2. Jab We Met (T-shirts On Harem Pants)

Only a fashion icon like Kareena Kapoor can get away with this rather deadly combination. The talented actress plays the character of bubbly and optimistic Geet and is a stark contrast to Shahid Kapoor’s uptight and workaholic character, Aditya. When the movie came out, it inspired women to start experimenting with Harem pants once more and the outfit was all the rage.

3. Veere Di Wedding (Metallic Dresses)

The four fabulous ladies from Veere Di Wedding came across as total #BossBabes in their sultry and fierce outfits. Not ones to shy away from the glam and glitz, these ladies took to the clubs in shiny metallic outfits and short dresses. Talk about not giving a s**t about “log kya kahenge”. Besides their empowering looks, this movie deals with a lot of topics that are often glazed over by mainstream media, including “female self-love”, women developing cold feet before marriage as well as the taboo of divorce.

4. Ram Leela (Rajputana Ghagras)

Those who’ve watched Ram Leela can probably tell that the chemistry between Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone is totally off the charts. But what’s also undeniable is the costume designers’ taste in fashion as they put Deepika in gorgeous ghagras. The outfits featured contemporary cholis, traditional bandhanis, and also had mirror work detailed on them.

5. Aisha (International Fashion Labels)

Aisha featured Sonam Kapoor playing the role of the titular character and brought attention to preppy upper class fashion. With bright pastel and floral motifs, it’s no wonder that style icon, Sonam Kapoor was roped in to play Aisha. This was probably one of the first Bollywood films to introduce the Indian audience to big fashion names like Gucci, Ferragamo, Prada, and Chanel. Also, how could we forget the famous Lady Dior bag that Sonam rocked in almost every frame of the film.

6. Wake Up Sid! (Graphic T-shirts)

While graphic tees have been an essential of the college going kid’s wardrobe, Ranbir’s character, Sid, brought the style back in fashion and made us laugh with his quirky t-shirt choices throughout the film. As much as we initially despised Sid’s character for being a lazy, good for nothing at the start of the film, we can’t help but love his outfit choices.

7. 2 States (Spaghetti Tops And Long Skirts)

Alia plays the character of Ananya in the movie 2 States. She’s mostly seen in a fusion of Indo-western outfits, pairing t-back and spaghetti tops with gorgeous long skirts and desi makeup. The actress also rocks gorgeous and chunky accessories throughout the film and it definitely inspired many of us to add a bit of desi to our western outfits.

8. Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (Blue Georgette Saree)

Who can forget the classic ‘player’ and ‘boys will be boys’ song, Badtameez Dil? While Ranbir is supposed to be the star attraction in the video and charms us with his suave moves, it’s Deepika who truly steals the show. The actress grooves to the beat in a super hot cobalt blue georgette saree with champagne gold borders and a black sleeveless blouse. Total #receptiongoals according to us! This saree became a huge trend back in the days and it was quite easy to spot women at events wearing plain blue saree with golden borders and a black blouse.

Sure, the 2000s were known for rather cringey fashion, but we’re hoping trends today are a little more stylish and iconic. As they say, “Fashion fades but beauty is eternal.” Which of these looks was your favorite and which of these looks would you like to rock in your day to day life?
