Friendship is a beautiful bond, isn’t it? It isn’t outlined by gender, caste, or society. Whether you are best friends with a human or with your dog, the bond of friendship is irreplaceable and unbreakable. From arguments to fights, from love to tears, this amazing and totally confusing bond has been depicted oh-so-beautifully in the Bollywood movies. Friendship has been a vital theme for most of the Bollywood movies. While some movies have shown the complexities that can sprout in friendship, there are other movies that have showed real-life experiences that each one of us could relate to.

Friendship goals are being given by Bollywood movies for years. Here’s a list of Bollywood movies we’ve put together that have literally defined and redefined what friendship is supposed to be like. Let’s take a look at it.

1. Dil Chahta Hai

This movie can be considered as a true entertainer in all rights. The movie was directed by the talented Farhan Akhtar. In this movie, we got to see three amazing characters — Akaash, Sid, and Sameer. The camaraderie that these three characters shared in the movie was truly a tear-jerker. With Saif’s stupidities, Akshaye Khanna’s calmness, and Aamir’s wit, Dil Chahta Hai is one of Bollywood’s favorite movies, as it not only gives us friendship goals, but also teaches what bromance is all about. It’s more than a decade since this movie hit the screens, and it still manages to hold a special place in everybody’s heart.

2. Rang De Basanti

This movie sets an example for all those friends who swear that they can do anything for their friends. Directed by Bollywood’s ace filmmaker, Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, this movie was about presenting the tales of freedom fighters of India in the contemporary time. The movie takes a turn when the same group of friends turn into rebels for a cause to fight against the injustice directed by the Indian army at friend who lost his life. The climax of the movie is very heartbreaking as it shows that the friends die bravely for their late-friend. The scene is bound to move everybody to tears.

3. Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara

This 2011 Bollywood film is yet another one that revolves around three best friends. Directed by Zoya Akhtar and starring Hrithik Roshan, Farhan Akhtar, and Abhay Deol as the leads, this movie is all about the road trip to Spain that these three musketeers take. The road trip helps each of the three characters bond with each other after being away from each other for long. It also helps the three get rid of their fears and explore their inner selves in a better manner. From re-kindling old bonds to self-exploration, this movie gave us all some major life and friendship lessons.

4. Angry Indian Goddesses

In a time and age, where misogyny and patriarchy rule the planet, it is very important for the lesser fortunate gender—women—to stand for and by each other. This movie is considered to be India’s first women-buddy picture, which showcases how different is the nature of friendship among the females when compared to men. In other words, this movie is a feminist dramedy! Frieda, one of the characters in the film invites her besties to her house in Goa and what looks like a fun celebrations takes a serious turn as the movie highlights gender inequality, women objectification, skin-color issues, rape nightmares, and much more. This movie, which released in 2015, was one of its kind and for the audience, it was a new form of an eye-opener.

5. 3 Idiots

Directed by ace filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani, 3 Idiots is a movie that aptly defines how friends always have each other’s back no matter what. We all know that there are certain ambitions that we can never share with our parents. In such cases, it’s our friends that we can speak about it to. And, our friends provide us with the right motivation and guidance without being judgmental about our ambitions. The movie that revolves around three primary characters, who met in an engineering institute, highlights everything that a friend can do for you—right from keeping secrets to convincing your parents for something you are dreaming of doing.

6. Dor

This is one of the lesser-known movies, which also depicts the evolution of a friendship between two women, who come from extremely different worlds. This 2006 movie is about two women Zeenat (Gul Panag) and Meera (Ayesha Takia). The movie, which is directed by Nagesh Kukunoor, highlights the friendship that these two women develop most purely and subtly. While Meera falls prey to traditions and customs after becoming a window, Zeenat, on the other hand, has the vital task of saving her husband’s life who is convicted for a murder. The companionship that both these women develop leads to  redemption for both of them. It’s a very serious movie about friendship when compared to the other fun Bollywood movies that revolve around friendship.
